What have we been up to? Lauren Proulx Melissa Geiszler On-Farm Research Coordinators and Agronomists
2017: 6th Season • 41 Wheat Trials • 28 growers • 12 Topdress Nitrogen • 11 PGR, Palisade • 10 Seeding Rate • 3 Sulfur • 2 Variable Rate Nitrogen • 1 Protein Analyzer • 2 Additional N Rich Strip • 4 Soybean Trials • 1 Tillage http://www.minnesota-map.org/road-map.htm
Topdressing with 28% UAN • All locations combined: • 28% Reduced test weight 0.5 lb/bu. • 28% Increased protein 0.5% • No effect on yield except for three sites • - Two had improved yield and one had a negative response Mother Nature may not come through for us with high nitrogen mineralization like she has the last two seasons
Palisade 2017 – not a great year for testing Palisade • Little lodging across the region Did not significantly improve yield or grain quality • Generally shortened the wheat Reduced lodging and small yield increases can equal a positive ROI
Seeding Rate SY Valda (4 locations) • 1 mil. - 96.8 bu/A • 1.5 mil. - 92.9 bu/A • 2 mil. - 93.8 bu/A • Difference of 3.9 bu/A • Protein greatest at 1 mil. Linkert (6 locations) • Second year showing no difference in yield or grain quality across seeding rates
Sulfur vs No Added S • 100lbs AMS broadcast vs No Added S • 3 locations, first year Data suggests trend toward lower TW, protein, and yield for sulfur treatments • May be due to other factors • First year’s data, need more locations!!!
Variable Rate Nitrogen • VRN vs a Flat Rate N • 2 sites, first year • VRN showed an increase in protein by 0.5% • Increases in yield were small - not significant • Would like 5 more site in 2018
On- Combine Protein Analyzer • Generates protein map while harvesting • Similar to a yield map • 2017 successfully installed analyzer and mapped protein across several fields • 2018 - hope to acquire 2nd analyzer to increase data set across different environments • Will need another cooperator to install analyzer on combine!!!
2018 Research • Topdressing N with predictive tools • Palisade PGR (3rd year) • Seeding rate (3rd year) • Sulfur (2nd year) • Variable rate N fertilizer vs flat N rate (2nd year) • On-combine protein analyzer (2nd year) • NEW 2018 Flag leaf fungicide in a 3 app system
