Youth Tobacco Use Study: Alarming Trends and Prevention Efforts Needed

This study examines the prevalence of tobacco use among students, including experimentation, daily smoking, early initiation, and cessation attempts. Data on cigarette, chewing tobacco, and cigar use, as well as acquisition sources, is analyzed. School-based tobacco activities are also highlighted. Comprehensive data provides insights for targeted interventions to curb youth tobacco use.

  2. Percentage of students who ever tried cigarette smoking, even one or two puffs

  3. Percentage of students who ever smoked cigarettes daily, that is, at least one cigarette every day for 30 days

  4. Percentage of students who smoked a whole cigarette for the first time before age 13 years

  5. Percentage of students who smoked cigarettes on one or more of the past 30 days

  6. Among students who reported current cigarette use, the percentage who smoked more than 10 cigarettes per day on the days they smoked during the past 30 days

  7. Percentage of students who smoked cigarettes on 20 or more of the past 30 days

  8. Percentage of students who smoked cigarettes on school property on one or more of the past 30 days

  9. Among students who reported current cigarette use, the percentage who ever tried to quit smoking cigarettes during the past 12 months

  10. Percentage of students who were in the same room with someone who was smoking cigarettes on one or more of the past seven days

  11. Among students who were less than 18 years of age and who reported current cigarette use, the percentage who usually got their own cigarettes by buying them in a store or gas station during the past 30 days Weighted data
