Respect for the Elderly Made By ExeniaGavilanes and Jessica Hinton
Introduction • In today's hectic society people are so busy with their daily lives, working, shopping, and family that they have no time to take care of the elders that need assistance.
Japan • Japanese culture values its elders for the wisdom and experience they provide to the company. Age equals rank in Japan, so the older the person, the more important they are. • One never disagrees with him and always gives him his due attention.
India • In a hierarchy driven society such as India, elders are considered worthy of respect by virtue of being elders only. It is ingrained in Indian culture to respect and honor elders be it a sibling elder by a minute or a great grand father, or in fact elders not related by blood or marriage. And the honor is not merely automatic in the way you address them but deep rooted in that one doesn’t reply back to, talk loudly to or in front of, counter against, look down upon or raise a hand on elders.
Africa • Ancestors are bestowed with mystical powers and authority, and are intimately involved with the welfare of their kin-group but they are not linked in the same way to every member of that group. The elders' authority is related to their close link to the ancestors.
Islam • “Your Lord has commanded that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to your parents. If one or both of them reach old age with you, do not say to them a word of disrespect, or scold them, but say a generous word to them. And act humbly to them in mercy, and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy on them, since they cared for me when I was small.” (17: 23-24) – Qur'an • The Islamic society, being very religious, follow the teachings of the Qur’an. (As shown above)
America • Being a more liberalist society, America has moved away from things such as religion and punishments, to where the newer generations aren't respecting elders like they used to in years past. • Since America is trying to accommodate every type of race, religion etc… it makes it hard to instill moral beliefs such as respecting elders.
Solution • In view of the characteristics of other societies it is obvious the respect for elders differs from one culture to another. • One way to improve on this issue is by teaching the youth of the nation better morals and ethics in regards to the elderly and the way the elderly are treated.
