12/2/13Light and Color • Science podcast: Escaped Star • Final Exam, next Monday 8-10 am in SCI 111,this room. The test objective sheet is on the course website. We’ll review on Thursday. • Reminder to do online course evaluation • Finish color • Start reflection • Optional notebook submission tomorrow • Homework: worksheets Light reflection, Specular vs. diffuse reflection , associated readings
Learning objectives • Use the color wheel to predict the result of adding colors • Use the color wheel to predict the result of subtracting colors • Compare/contrast the reflection patterns of a smooth and a rough surface.
Color • Go over Color Addition and Subtraction, Viewed in Another Light at your tables. • Reinforce findings with color filter demos • Go to RGB Lighting http://www.physicsclassroom.com/shwave/lights.cfm • Explain what you see with each color combination turned on (R, B, G, RG, RB, GB, RGB) • Go over the mathematics of color using the color wheel
Reflection • Specular reflection occurs on a smooth surface such as a mirror • Diffuse reflection occurs on a rough surface such as wall
Law of Reflection • Angle of incidence equals angle of reflection • The angle is measured from an imaginary line drawn at a right angle to the surface • For a smooth surface, every part of the surface has the same normal line • For a rough surface, neighboring areas have different normal lines. This law applies to all reflective surfaces.
Diffuse Reflection • For each section of the surface, the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. • There is minimal glare with diffuse reflection because the light is scattered over a larger region. This is why it is easier to read from rough paper than smooth paper Discuss Light Reflection and Specular vs Diffuse reflection worksheet
