  2. Hyphens (-) • Use a hyphen • If part of a word is carried over from one line to the next. • RIGHT -- Num-ber let-ter • WRONG -- a-cross co-de • In compound words. • Half-dollar, great-uncle

  3. Hyphens (-) • In compound numbers from twenty-one through ninety-nine. • Sixty-three, forty-five • In spelled-out fractions. • One-half, three-fifths

  4. Dashes (--) • Use dashes to show a sudden break in thought. • Louis Braille -- who lost his sight at age three -- invented an alphabet for blind people.

  5. Parentheses () • Use parentheses to set off material that explains the rest of a sentence. • He finally answered (after taking five minutes to think) that he did not understand the question.
