Hyphens (-) • In compound numbers from twenty-one through ninety-nine. • Sixty-three, forty-five • In spelled-out fractions. • One-half, three-fifths
Dashes (--) • Use dashes to show a sudden break in thought. • Louis Braille -- who lost his sight at age three -- invented an alphabet for blind people.
Parentheses () • Use parentheses to set off material that explains the rest of a sentence. • He finally answered (after taking five minutes to think) that he did not understand the question.
