  5. 4 Math- Integrated Math I,II,II and Senior Math • 4 English • 3 Science, Lab Science, Biology, and Chemistry or Physics • World History, U.S. History, Government/Economics • Personal Finance • 1 Art (Art, Music, Drama) • .5 P.E. • 1 Wellness • 3 Pathway Classes • 2 years of a World Language (Spanish, Latin, French, Arabic) Graduation Requirements

  6. Regular Diploma • Meet all credit requirements for MNPS. • Take required TN Ready assessments. • Take Civics Exam. • Take ACT. Honors • Meet all requirements for regular diploma AND 3.0 unweighted gpaAND score at or above all of the following ACT subject scores: *English 18 *Math 22 *Science 23 *Reading 22 DIPLOMA TYPES

Distinction Meet all requirements for regular diploma, earn an unweighted gpa of 3.0 or higher, AND complete one of the following: • Participate in one of the Governor’s Schools • Participate in an All State musical organization • Attain an ACT composite score of 31 or higher • Attend Boys or Girls State • Score a 3 or higher on 2 or more AP exams • Earn 12 or more hours of college credit • Be a National Merit Finalist or Semi-Finalist • Earn a Nationally Recognized Industry Certification • Meet the TN Scholars Requirement • Complete Cambridge Pathway to TN Diploma • Complete SSMV Program • Placement in a statewide competition or state officer

Search for schools within your chosen major https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org &https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/ • If you’re unsure of your major take some career assessments to help you decide • Decide if you want to stay in state or go out of state (in state is cheaper & you can use the HOPE scholarship & TN Promise for community college) • VISIT YOUR FINAL CHOICES  • Apply to your top choices by Dec. 1st • In the spring when you find out your application status, compare your financial aid packages and make a final decision Choosing Your School

Go to your chosen college’s office of admissions website to see what they require for application • This may vary between schools but most likely you will need the following four things at minimum: Complete & Submitted Application Form, Application Fee, Official ACT/SAT score, Official High School Transcript • Check with admissions office for who/how they waive application fees if they do Applying

A shared online application for over 800 colleges and universities across the United States:  https://www.commonapp.org/explore-colleges • Review the list to see if any of the schools are on your list to apply to. If they are it saves time, if they are not there is no reason to fill it out. • The Common Application has a writing requirement where schools select which questions you must answer: https://www.commonapp.org/apply/2019-essay-prompts • Students filling out the Common App need their School Counselor’s email as well as at least two other emails of teacher recommenders. • Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship is also through CommonApp starting this year.  Deadline to apply: Nov. 20th, 2018 https://www.jkcf.org/our-scholarships/college-scholarship-program/ Common Application

Act Scores Official Transcript Fill out an online transcript request for your chosen schools on the Overton Counseling website: http://johscounseling.weebly.com/ It will be sent w/n 2 weeks of your request by school staff; plan accordingly for deadlines • Needs to come from ACT; Metro does not list ACT scores on transcripts • Go to www.actstudent.org • Click on Send Your Scores • Cost is $13 per score per school sent to • If you are retaking the exam, list which 4 schools you want it sent to, they will do so for free Sending official documents

  14. Guaranteed Admission Conditional Admission If one of the bullets to the left are not met, student will need to fill out a personal statement form provided by the university. If you are admitted, you will be under close academic supervision and be required to participate in a few additional programs during your freshman year. • Minimum 3.0 GPA • Minimum 22 ACT Composite • Minimum 2.7 GPA & 19 ACT Composite Admission Requirements (Real ex: MTSU)

English (4 years) • Visual or Performing Art (1 year) • Algebra I or Math for Technology II & Algebra II (2 years) • Geometry (1 year) • Natural/Physical Sciences (2 years) • * @ least 1 lab science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Principles of Tech) • Social Studies (1 year) • *World, Ancient, Modern or European History or World Geography • United States History (1 year) • Foreign Language (2 years same language) • MTSU is an in-state school so obviously our standards coincide: this is most important to double check for out of state schools or schools that are more challenging to get in to Required high school courses (MTSU)

If you don’t get into a four-year university apply to a community college • Do well your freshman year of college and reapply to a four-year school • Freshman year is like a new start and when you reapply, they will be looking more at how successful you did in college instead of how you did in high school What if I don’t get in?

Scholarship: a sum of money or other aid granted to a student, because of merit, need, etc., to pursue his or her studies • Grant: a sum of money provided by a government, local authority, or public fund to finance educational study • Loan: something lent or furnished on condition of being returned, especially a sum of money lent at interest Paying for college: Scholarships, Grants, & Loans Defined

Apply as soon as possible after October 1st, 2019 for the Fall 2020 semester: https://fafsa.ed.gov/ • Need parent’s 2018 income taxes, student & parent social security numbers  • Attend FAFSA night @ JOHS Tues Oct. 22                                  OR                FAFSA Y MAS @ Casa Azafran Sun. Oct 20 • FAFSA goes through your chosen college(s) financial aid office and will present you with a financial aid package based on your parents' income FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid

For students formerly on free or reduced lunch you may be eligible for the PELL Grant from the government  • Programs are first come/first served and have a limited number of funds: the earlier you fill out the application, the better chance you have of receiving them • The HOPE Scholarship goes through the FAFSA as well, you do not need to do anything additional other than fill out the FAFSA to be considered for this scholarship (3.0 GPA or 21 ACT) FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid

When you receive your acceptance from a university, search for scholarships their school offers specific to their students; this will be listed on their website (check deadlines) • Check with your parents’ work, your work and any other church or organization you may be involved with; you would be surprised which organizations offer scholarships • Search online for scholarships • Check the Overton Counseling website & school email for scholarship newsletters: http://johscounseling.weebly.com/ Scholarships

If you are asking someone to write a recommendation for you please provide them with the following information: • Deadline for recommendation (give them at least 2 weeks advance) • Addressed envelope if they will not be given an online link (you do not see the recommendation) • What the recommendation is for (scholarship or admission) • Personal information: extracurricular activities, work/volunteer experience, church/organization involvement, personal struggles, what you want to go to college for, etc. (resume) Recommendations
