  2. Reasons to Lay Up Treasure in Heaven- • Treasure on Earth is Insecure- • Moth and Rust Destroy • Thieves break in and Steal • Loss due to inflation, stock devaluation, bankruptcies, faulty investment, etc.

  3. Reasons to Lay Up Treasure in Heaven- • Treasure in Heaven is Secure • Neither Moth and Rust Can Destroy 1 Peter 1:3 • Thieves cannot break in and Steal 1 Peter 1:4,5

  4. Reasons to Lay Up Treasure in Heaven- • Our Treasure is Where our Heart Will Be… • That is, where our affections, our hopes, our dreams will be • If our treasure is on earth, our hearts will experience much disappointment • If our treasure is in Heaven our hearts will not suffer disappointment

  5. Reasons to Lay Up Treasure in Heaven- • Whatever happens on earth will not devastate us! • Hebrews 10:32-34 • When these word are taken and applied, the storms of life will not overwhelm us • Matthew 7:24-27

  6. Reasons to Lay Up Treasure in Heaven- • To Keep Our Eye Good… • “Body” = soul or inner man • “Eye” = gaze of soul or heart • “Good” = “simple, single, uncomplicated” • “Bad” = “wicked, evil” • “Evil Eye” = “envious, covetous” • Proverbs 28:22; Matthew 20:15; Mark 7:22

  7. Reasons to Lay Up Treasure in Heaven- • Explain the Metaphor: • If the gaze of the soul be “good”, then one is filled which “light” Ephesians 5:8-10 • If the gaze of the soul be “evil”, one’s soul is filled with “darkness”

  8. Reasons to Lay Up Treasure in Heaven- • Thus the need for warning: • Guard what goes into your eye • Remember “lust of the eyes” is materialism • Be rich toward God – Luke 12:13-21 • Luke 12:15 “beware of covetousness” • Luke 12:21 “not rich toward God”

Reasons to Lay Up Treasure in Heaven- • Thus the need for warning: • 1 Timothy 6:9 “desire to be rich” • Snares and temptations • Many foolish & harmful lusts • To drown in destruction & perdition • 1 Timothy 6:10 “love of money” • Some strayed from the faith • Pierced themselves with many sorrows

  10. Reasons to Lay Up Treasure in Heaven- • To Make God Our Master… • Matthew 6:24 - None can serve two masters • “total loyalty” • Exodus 34:14 • Mammon = Aramaic for Riches • We Have To Choose • Ephesians 5:5 ; Colossians 3:5 • Choose to Serve God! Matthew 6:33

  11. How To Lay Up Treasures In Heaven- • Giving to the Poor • Luke 12:32,33 • Luke 18:18-27 • 1 Timothy 6:17-19 • Rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share • Storing up a good foundation for the time to come • Lay hold on eternal life

How To Lay Up Treasures In Heaven- • Not that Eternal Life can be Purchased • Salvation by Grace through Faith –Ephesians 2:8.9; Titus 3:5 • Redeemed by precious blood – 1 Peter 1:18,19 • As children of God, recipient of every spiritual blessing –Romans 8:16,17; Ephesians 1:3 • Giving to poor helps lay hold of eternal life • Free hearts from covetousness Ephesian 5:5 • Remind of when our TRUE REWARD will be received - Luke 14:12-14

How To Lay Up Treasures In Heaven- • Not called to Poverty, or lack of Luxuries • God wants us to enjoy what we have-1 Timothy 6:17 “gives richly all things to enjoy” ; Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 “enjoy the good of all his labor” • Proper enjoyment requires a heart for giving – Acts 20:35 • Work with our hands – 1 Timothy 5:8 • Have for others in need – Ephesians 4:28

  14. Are we Laying Up Treasure In Heaven? • Jesus told us WHY • Jesus and Paul also told us HOW • Are you Storing up a good foundation for the time to come, and lay hold on eternal life?
