Terry Hay of New Zealand worked a lot of jobs when he was going to the University of California at Irvine. He was a gardener, a trash collector, and a dishwasher, and meanwhile studied Economics. He earned his degree in 1971 but decided there wasn't much that he could do with it that interested him, so he went into business for himself, founding a health food distribution company in Hawaii. After selling it, starting a new business, selling that one and buying another, he retired in 2008.
