  7. Every day in class… • Be sure that you have a spiral notebook and a pen or pencil with you daily. (If you forget yours, do not ask your friends or Mr. Lee or Mrs. Lira-Anderson for paper and pencil! We will call your parents to bring them for you. ) • Books, bags, purses, etc. under your designed chair. • We’ll sign the pledges of allegiance. • (If this is against your religion, see me after class. I’ll give you an alternative.) • Daily journals at the end of class. • LEAVE YOUR SPIRAL IN CLASS!

  8. Welcome to ASL! This is my third years here at Atascocita. Before this I taught at various High Schools and community college.

  9. About me… In the hearing world I’m called Mr. Lee. In the Deaf world my name is “KrazieLee.” (or Tyran Lee)

  10. So what do you call me? Since you’re in here to learn about my language and my culture, you can call me Tyran or Krazielee.

  11. Ha ha! Why Krazie? In the Deaf world we give each other name-signs (much like your parents give you a name).

  12. What’s a name-sign? Name-signs are “names” in the Deaf world. Some name-signs are descriptive (such as mine) that represent something about you – physical appearance, personality, etc.

  13. Ok, ok. But why “Krazie?” As the school year progresses, you’ll understand why I have that name-sign. Basically I’m a crazy kinda guy. I drive my friends CRAZY!

  14. Rules, rules. Gotta have rules…. Like any other class, I have rules you will follow. I cover them in-depth on my teacher’s website and on your syllabus, but for now I’ll just mention the FOUR CAB RULES.

  15. CAB Rules? Eh? CAB means Culturally Appropriate Behavior. They’re important in this class because you need to learn how to show proper respect for the people and culture that use ASL.

  16. What are the CAB rules? • There’s only four of them: • Voices off • Eye contact with who is signing • Participation • Respect

  17. Voices off In your other classes you’re used to being able to talk (even while the teacher is teaching). However, in this class you use your eyes instead of your ears to learn.

  18. Voices off That’s not something most of you are used to. So when someone talks (or you’re talking) it is VERY distracting!! Please, be respectful and turn your voices off in class.

  19. Eye contact In your other classes, you’re used to using your ears to learn. In here, we use our eyes for ALL learning situations.

  20. Eye contact So, get used to paying attention (using your eyes) at all times. At first this might be tiring, but you’ll get used to it.

  21. Participation How do you (and I) know you’re learning things correctly? By participating of course!

  22. Participation Get in the habit of SIGNING EVERYTHING back to me. By doing this, you reinforce what you learn and I can observe you and correct any mistakes.

  24. Respect The MOST IMPORTANT rule. I require that you respect yourself, each other, and me. Respect is part of life. RESPECT is NOT a GIFT. YOU HAVE to EARN IT!

  25. Respect Respect includes being mindful of others, obeying rules, and basically treat others the same way you want to be treated.

  26. Want to get on my good side? It’s quite simple – Follow CAB. If don’t follow CAB, then you’re not going to learn and I’ll get on your case for disrupting my class.

  27. Want to get on my “oh crap” list? It’s quite simple – Disrespect CAB. If don’t follow CAB, then you’re disrespecting me, my culture, and this class.

  28. Cultural rules These four rules are also very important in the Deaf world for cultural reasons. Why? Well, we will cover this on the ASL Video Journal as part of your homework.

  29. ASL Video Journal? Yep. We use ASL Video Journal instead of writing in class. We will set you’re your account as soon as we get the Ipad cart.

  30. This is where all homework, assignments, reviews, discussions, etc. are all posted. We’ll create accounts in a little bit and I want you guys to check it out often! GOOGLE DRIVE

  31. Cell phones… Because cell phones are against school rules and also against CAB rule #2, if I even SEE your phone (using it or not) I’ll take it. You will only use your phone when I request you to use it for class instruction/video.

  32. Cell phones… If you’re tempted to use your phone or are worried I might see it and take it, you can put it in the Safe Zone Box at the beginning of class.

  33. Cell phones… If I catch students hiding their phones and/or using them during class instead of putting them in the Safe Zone Box then it will go into my RED box and you will have to pay a $15 fine to get it back.

  34. This includes… • This rule applies to: • cell phones • iPods • cameras • calculators • any other electrical devices

  35. In short… If I even SEE your phone, iPod, camera, calculator, or any other type of electronic device, I will take it. (It does not matter if you are using it or not.)

  36. So be smart and put your electronic devices in the Safe Zone.

  37. How do you rate yourself? Let’s take a moment and walk through it together…

  38. Voices OFF 4 – Did not talk AT ALL 3 – Talked maybe once or twice 2 – Talked some of the time 1 – Talked often 0 – Talked all the time

  39. Eye Contact 4 – Paid FULL attention at all times 3 – Paid attention most the time 2 – Paid attention sometimes 1 – Paid attention rarely 0 – Did not pay attention

  40. Participation 4 – Signed EVERYTHING 3 – Signed most everything 2 – Signed often 1 – Signed a little bit 0 – Didn’t sign at all

  41. Respect This is calculated based on the other THREE rules. This may also drop further if there are “incidences” in class.
