Vocabulary • Compound Event- an event that combines two or more events, using the word and or the word or. • Mutually Exclusive Events- events that have no common outcome. • Overlapping Events- events that have at least one common outcome. • Independent Events-two events such that the occurrence of one event has no effect on the occurrence of the other event. • Dependent Events- two events such that the occurrence of one event affects the occurrence of the other event.

  3. Example 1 Find the probability of A or B • You roll a number cube. Find the probability that you roll a 4 or a prime number.

  4. Example 2 Find the probability of A or B • You roll a number cube. Find the probability that you roll an even number or a number greater than 3. • You roll a number cube. Find the probability that you roll a 1 or a 6. • You roll a number cube. Find the probability that you roll an even number or a 2.

  5. Example 3 Find the probability of A or B. • You roll two number cubes. What is the probability that you roll a 1 first and a 2 second?

  6. Example 4 Find the probability of A or B. • You and a friend must select a golf ball from a bucket to play miniature golf. There are 3 yellow balls, 4 red balls, 5 green balls, and 4 purple balls. You select a golf ball and then your friend selects a golf ball. What is the probability that both golf balls are green?

  7. Example 5 • A bag contains 6 red marbles, 5 green marbles, and 3 blue marbles. You randomly draw 2 marbles, one at a time. Find the probability that both are red if: • you replace the first marble. • you do not replace the first marble.
