  5. What to Avoid When Listening • Putting your feet up on your desk. • The continual head nod. • Not nodding at all. • Looking behind the speaker. • Tapping your fingers on a table top. • Rocking back and forth in your chair. • Checking your messages on your phone.

  6. The Way You Should Argue • On balance (restate your main point) • Avoid sounding arrogant or condescending • Use a two sided message

  7. Your Word Choice and Language Choice When Speaking • People develop social norms about language in a given situation. The Two Aspects of Language Choice: • Opinionated language • Language Intensity -Qualifiers -Metaphors

  8. The Tone of Your Voice • Avoid a very slow delivery. Speaking too slowly leaves the impression, intended or unintended, that you believe that if you don’t slow down, the listener won’t “get it.” • Avoid overly pronounced delivery Example: “SSSir.
