About Me From Austin, Texas (area) Undergraduate degree: Texas State University (Spanish & History) Master’s: Currently last semester at NAU Learned Spanish at university, in Mexico, and later Argentina Interests: • Spanish & Portuguese • Latin American Travel • Developing an online Spanish language school • Swimming • Good music & movies

  4. Bienvenidos SPA 102 class policies: • Be on time: The time frame is 10 minutes after the class has started. Three times being late equals one unexcused absence. • Be proactive by participating in class! • Speak in Spanish unless is unavoidable. • Respect others and their opinions! • Assignments have to be turned in on time, sorry procrastinators! • Cellphones and electronic devices are allowed only when required by the teacher. • Eating is not allow in the class room. • No extra credits. • NO LATE WORK ALLOWED

  5. Required Materials • Blanco, J., & Donley, P. (2012). VISTAS. Introducción a la lenguaespañola. 4th edition. Vista High Learning – In the NAU bookstore. / Supersite (online materials: http://vhlcentral.com ) • Passcode to the Supersite (It comes with the textbook) – includes vText with Supersite Code. Materials (loose-leaf edition of the students book, vtext and supersite code) can also be purchased at http://www.vistahigherlearning.com/store/nau.htm • On-line readings / Extensive reading resources: http://leyendoenspa102.wetpaint.com/

  6. evaluation There are not extra credits, there are enough credits you can get by doing your assignments and following the class policies. Participation, homework on-line exercises and extensive reading: 12% • Daily assignments, readings from the text book, two short stories on the web, an article a week submitting a form along with it. 3 in the LLC hours per term .you can also print documents with no charge at the LLC. Compositions: 8% • Four in total, three in class and the four one out of class. Quizzes: 10% • Every Thursday un less there is another assignment or exam.

  7. Portfolio (on-line/web or on paper): 7% (contest) • First draft “ information about you” January 24th. • Please check syllabus for specifications. Exams: 25% • After finishing every one of theTherewill be two 50-minute tests, all of which will include listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and composition. Final exam: 20% • Comprehensive Listening exam: 8% • Comprehensive Oral assessment: 10% • Interview style. Your grade for this course will be based on the following: 100-90 = A; 80-89 = B; 70-79 = C; 60-69 = D; below 60 = F

Attendance • After 4 unexcused or unexplained absences, your final grade will be automatically lowered by 10%, after 8 absences 20%, after 12 absences 30%, and after 16 absences 40%. • i.e. 5th absence from A à B, 10th absence from A à C) • All legitimate absences will be verified, including Institutional and Fronske excuses.

Retrocredits • For students to be eligible for retrocredits, "This must be the first course in this language taken at NAU, or any other university or community college”. • Take the placement test within the first week of class at http://www.cal.nau.edu/languages/placementexams.asp • Video, http://sites.google.com/site/naulanguages/home/retrocredits

  10. Academic Dishonesty The department strictly enforces the university’s policies on academic dishonesty. Specific action will be taken against students caught cheating on tests or examinations, forging and altering forms or documents, and engaging in plagiarism on any written work. Sanctions for students found guilty in matters of academic dishonesty could include receiving and F for a course and, for repeat offenders, expulsion from the university.
