Catherine (17) is interested in reading Gothic novels • She imagines all sorts of cruel happenings e.g. getting caught by a man who looks like a vampire, Cathy= victim • She is invited to Bath with Mr and Mrs Allen • At a ball she meets Mr Tilney and is head over heels in love • Her brother is in love with Isabella Thorpe, a false-faced woman • Isabella’s brother tells lies about Catherine • Catherine is invited to Northanger Abbey • She suspects Mr Tilney’s father to be a murderer • Mr Tilney catches her spying in the abbey • Though they like one another, they are separated by Mr Tilney’s father (due to lies by Mr Thorpe) • At the end Mr Tilney is allowed to propose to Catherine

Anne fell deeply in love with handsome young naval officer Frederick Wentworth when she was 19 • She was persuaded not to marry him (no rank/fortune) • 8 years later she still loves him and regrets her decision • They meet again; see each other quite often in Bath • He is now a wealthy man and is interested in women much younger than Anne • Frederick notices that he still has feelings for Anne • Anne receives a proposal by Mr William Elliott • Frederick thinks he is too late to propose to her himself • … see what the ending is (and have a look at the beautiful Royal Crescent of Bath)!
