  1. How Do I Open My Garage Door During a Power Outage? Ever been locked out of your garage during a power outage? Automatic garage door openers are a convenience that we may take for granted –until they’re rendered useless. If your car is stuck in the garage, don’t panic! Follow our steps below to learn how to manually open and close your garage door and read our suggestions to make this disaster a little less stressful. How To Open the Garage Door Manually From the inside: In order to use your garage door manually, it is best to start with a fully closed garage door. If you were to close your garage door manually while it is opened, the weight of the door could cause it to slam down – which could cause damage to the door and be dangerous to anyone standing nearby. 1.Pull the red emergency release cord on the motor to disconnect the door from the garage door opener. You should hear or feel it release. 2.Lift the garage door straight up until it is open. You should be able to do this with 1 arm. Make sure the door is all the way up and not moving so it will not fall back down. If your door is hard to lift with one arm or will not stay open, your springs, pulleys or other garage door parts may be damaged. A garage door technician should be called a soon as possible to inspect and repair. From the outside: If you do not have access to your garage from the outside or through your home, you should have an emergency key release installed on your garage door. Once installed, follow these steps to open your garage door: 1.Locate the emergency key release on the outside of your garage door and insert the key into the lock. 2.Turn the key and pull the lock tumbler out. 3.Once removed, you should see a cord in the lock tumbler hole. Pull that cord to disengage the motor. 4.Lift the garage door straight up until it is fully open and doesn’t try to fall back down. Re-engage the emergency key release: 1.Reconnect the motor following the steps below. 2.Put the lock tumbler back in the hole and lock it with the key. How Do I Reconnect the Motor? Once your power comes back on, you’ll need to reconnect your garage door opener. Follow these steps to properly re-engage your motor:

  2. 1.Make sure your garage door is closed. 2.Pull down on the red emergency release cord on the motor. 3.Manually lift the door until your hear or feel it connect again.
