Make sure the brake caliper and brake carriers (linings) are clean and free of dirt and foreign material. NOTE: If necessary, loosen bleed screw (2) to release the fluid in the brake caliper. 2. Loosen bolts (1) that hold pins (3) in position in the brake calipers. Push the brake pistons further back into the brake caliper to obtain the needed clearance to install new brake linings. 2. Put brake carrier (lining) (1) in position on the lower pins in the brake caliper. 3. Check the seals on pins (2). Push pins (2) in position in the caliper to hold the brake carriers (linings) in position. 4. Check the clearance between pins (4) on each end of the caliper and brake disc (6) with a thickness gauge (5). The clearance between pin (4) and brake disc (6) must not be less than 0.25 mm (.010 in.) and not more than 3.00 mm (.118 in.). Move pins (4) in or out to get the correct amount of clearance. 5. Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 45 ± 7 N·m (33 ± 5 lb.ft.). 6. Remove (bleed) the air from the brake system. See Testing And Adjusting. Disconnect brake line (1). Install tooling (A), and attach a hoist. Remove bolts (2), and remove brake caliper (3). The weight is 28 kg (62 lb.). NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the brake caliper assemblies. 2. Put the brake caliper in position, and install bolts (2). Remove boots (8) and packing (9). 7. Use tooling (A), and remove the two outside pistons (10). Remove two boots (11) and the packing. Inspect all parts for wear or damage, and make replacements if needed. 1. Install the packing for the two outside pistons. Put boot (1) on tool (A). Install the lip of boot (1) in the groove at the edge of the piston bore. Lubricate the packing and piston with clean brake fluid. Install the piston. Use tool (B) to press the piston until it bottoms in the bore. Remove tooling (A) and (B), and make sure the outer lip of boot (1) is in the groove of the piston. 2. Install the lip of boot (7) in the groove at the edge of the piston bore. 6. Lubricate the packing and piston with clean brake fluid. Install the piston. Use tool (C) to press the piston into the bore. Use tool (D) with tool (C) as needed until the piston bottoms in the bore. Remove Remove tooling (A), (C) and (D). Make sure the lip of boot (7) is in the groove of the piston. 7. Install the two O-ring seals (8) on pins (9). Lubricate the seals and pin bores with 5P960 Multipurpose Grease. Put retainer (3) in position on spindle (2), and install the four bolts that hold it in place. 3. Install O-ring seal (4) on spindle (5). 4. Put spindle (5) in position on the axle housing, and install the eight bolts that hold it in place. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 270 ± 25 N·m (200 ± 18 lb.ft.). NOTICE Make sure the bearing caps do not fall off of the spiders when the drive shaft is disconnected. The needle bearings in the caps can be lost. 2. Remove bolts (2) and straps (3). Slide yoke assembly (4) into the differential to disconnect the drive shaft. Use tape to keep the caps from falling off the drive shaft. 3. Remove guards (5). 4. Remove eight bolts (6). Raise the front of the machine until there is enough clearance to roll the front axle from under the machine. Install tooling (B), and roll the front axle from under the machine. Install Axle Housing (Front) 1. Put a suitable floor jack under the differential to prevent the axle housing from rotating. Put the axle housing in position under the machine. Remove tooling (A), and lower the machine onto the axle housing. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 60 ± 7 N·m (44 ± 5 lb.ft.). 4. Connect brake line (5). 5. Remove (bleed) the air from the brake system. See Remove Air From The Wheel Brake Hydraulic Circuit (Bleed The Brakes) in Systems Operation and Testing And Adjusting. NOTICE Make sure the bearing caps do not fall off of the spiders when the drive shaft is disconnected. The needle bearings in the caps can be lost. 3. Remove bolts (2) and straps (3). Slide yoke (4) into the differential to disconnect the drive shaft. Tape the caps to the spider. 4. Remove two bolts (5) that are opposite each other. Temporarily put two larger diameter flat washers (6) in position, and reinstall bolts (5). Put a suitable floor jack under the rear support to prevent the axle housing from rotating during removal. 7. Fasten a hoist, and raise the rear of the machine until there is enough clearance to roll the axle from under the machine. The weight of the rear of the machine without the axle housing assembly is 3409 kg (7500 lb.). 8. After the rear axle is removed, lower the machine onto tooling (B). 9. Drain the oil from the axle housing. 10. Put the axle housing and supports on tooling (C). The weight of the axle housing and supports is 1186 kg (2600 lb.). Remove the two oversize size washers (6). The weight of the front support is 41 kg (90 lb.). 12. Remove two lip seals (10). Remove the spiral ring that holds bearing (11) in the front support. Remove bearing (11). 13. Turn the rear axle housing over, and put it on tooling (C). 14. Remove bolts (12) and cover (13). 15. The weight of the rear support is 45 kg (100 lb.). Remove washer (18) from the rear support. 17. Remove seal ring (19) and bearing (20). 18. Remove bolt (21) that holds the brake line tee. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 270 ± 25 N·m (200 ± 18 lb.ft.). Install bolt (3) that holds the brake line tee to the trunnion. 2. Install bearing (4) and seal ring (5) in rear support (6). 3. Install three 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts, and fasten a hoist. Lubricate the bearing and seal ring with 5P960 Multipurpose Grease. Install rear support (6). 4. Lubricate two washers (7) with 5P960 Multipurpose Grease on both sides. Install a washer, plate (8) and washer (7). Press bearing (12) into front support (13) until it bottoms against the shoulder in the front support. Install the spiral ring that holds it in position. Install two lip seals (14). Make sure the lips of the seals point toward the outside of the support. 7. Lubricate the bearing and two lip seals with 5P960 Multipurpose Grease. Fasten two nylon straps and a hoist. Install front support (13). NOTE: Make sure the side of the front support with the spiral ring is up. 8. Temporarily install two larger diameter flat washers (15) that will extend beyond the outside diameter of housing (16). This will prevent the front support from sliding off while installing the axle housing. 9. Lubricate the lip seal in retainer (17) with differential oil. Put a suitable floor jack under the axle housing to prevent it from rotating during installation. Put the axle housing in position under the rear of the machine. 11. Lubricate the dowels in the rear support with grease. Lower the machine onto the rear axle housing. Make sure the dowels are in alignment with the holes in the rear frame. Install the eight bolts, washers and nuts (19). Tighten the nuts to a torque of 475 ± 50 N·m (350 ± 37 lb.ft.). 12. Remove the oversize washers installed in step 8, and install two bolts (20). 13. Put the drive shaft in position in yoke (18), and install straps (21) and bolts (22). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 60 ± 7 N·m (44 ± 5 lb.ft.). 14. Connect the brake hose on top of the axle housing. Remove (bleed) the air from the brake system. See Remove Air From The Wheel Brake Hydraulic Circuit (Bleed The Brakes) in Systems Operation and Testing And Adjusting. 15. Fill the differential with oil. See the Maintenance Guide. Remove bolts (6) that hold the front drive shaft and carrier bearing to the front frame. 3. Remove bolts (7) and straps (8), and disconnect the drive shaft from the front differential. 4. Use two 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws (9), and loosen the drive shaft and carrier. Remove it from the front frame. 5. Remove two bolts (10), and remove retainer (11). Remove bearing (14) from cage (15). Install Drive Shaft And Carrier Bearing (Front) 1. Lubricate the lip seal with 5P960 Multipurpose Grease, and install cage (4) on the shaft. Put bearing (6) in position. Use yoke (7) and retainer (8), and press bearing (6) onto the shaft. Remove yoke (7) and retainer (8). 4. Install the upper race over the bearing. 5. Use tooling (A), and install seal (9) into retainer (10) with the lip of the seal pointing inward as shown. Install O-ring seal (11). 6. Install retainer (10) and two bolts (12). 7. Install the spider and bearing assemblies on the end of the drive shaft. See Universal Joints. 8. The needle bearings in the caps can be lost. 1. Remove bolts (5) and straps (4) from both ends of the center drive shaft. 2. Loosen retainer (2) and slide ends (yokes) (1) and (3) of the drive shaft toward each other. Remove retainer (2) from end (yoke) (1). 5. Remove spider and bearing assemblies (6) and (7) from the ends (yokes) of the drive shaft. See Universal Joints. Install Drive Shaft (Center) 1. Install spider and bearing assemblies (3) and (4) on the ends (yokes) of the drive shaft. See Universal Joints. 2. Install retainer (2) on end (yoke) (1). NOTICE Make sure yoke (1) is in alignment with yoke (5) on the opposite end of the drive shaft. Damage to the machine can occur if the yokes are not in alignment. 3. Install end (yoke) (5) on end (yoke) (1) so that the arrows on the yokes are in alignment. 4. Remove the drive shaft from the machine. 3. Remove the spider and bearing assemblies from each end (yoke) of the drive shaft. See Universal Joints. Install Rear Drive Shaft 1. Install the spiders and bearing assemblies on each end (yoke) of the drive shaft. See Universal Joints. 2. Put drive shaft (3) in position, and pull yoke assembly (4) out of the differential until it makes contact with the drive shaft. 3. Install straps (1) and bolts (2) on both ends of the drive shaft. Use a press to push spider (2) and the bearing assemblies down until spider (2) makes contact with the yoke of the shaft assembly. 6. Secure bearing cap (7) that has been pushed out of the yoke in a vise as shown. 7. Pry up on the yoke as shown to remove the yoke and spider (2) from bearing cap (7). 8. Turn the drive shaft over, and put it in position on two 1 1/2" nuts (6) as shown. 9. Use a press to push spider (2) and the bearing assembly down until spider (2) makes contact with the yoke of the shaft assembly. 10. Repeat Steps 8 and 9 to remove the yoke and spider (2) from the other cap. 11. Remove spider (2) from the yoke of shaft assembly (5). Install Universal Joints NOTE: Inspect the bearing surfaces of spider (2) for wear or damage, make a replacement of the spider and bearing assemblies if either have too much wear. 1. Put spacer (2) in position in the yoke of the shaft assembly. Lift spider (2) up, and hold it in position in bearing cap (1) to hold the needle bearings in the cap. 4. Use a soft faced hammer, and install bearing (1) until it is approximately even with the outside surface of the yoke. 5. Put the other bearing cap (3) in position in the yoke of the shaft assembly as shown. 6. Lift spider (2) up slightly until it is engaged in both bearing caps. This will hold the needle bearings in both bearing caps. 7. Use a press and push bearing cap (3) down in the yoke until a retaining ring can be installed in the groove of the yoke. 8. Install the retaining ring in the groove of the yoke. 9. Use a press, and push the other bearing cap (1) down in the yoke until a retaining ring can be installed in the groove of the yoke. 10. Install the retaining ring in the groove of the yoke. 11. Install grease fitting (5) in spider (2). 12.
