Status • Grid research • Melbourne (Monash U) • Nimrod-G • GRACE (Eco Grid); GRB (broker) • Brisbane (QUT, DSTC) • ActiveSheets, G2 • Adelaide • active data archives; DISCWorld • PAGIS (user-level app builder; adaptive) • and others ... • Grid infrastructure • Sydney VisLab (Access Grid) • APAC (ANU Canberra) and state partners • Globus installations, enabling apps etc • emerging framework for Grid deployment
… status • Potential grid applications • many areas including • Bioinformatics; on line health • Environmental modelling; visualization; VR • Computational Physics and Chemistry • Data repositories: • satellite imagery; emergency services • Remote access to large scientific instruments & data • observatories; high-energy physics • e.g.CANGAROO
Lessons • Building grid apps is not easy • a lot more than just running Globus! • We need higher level tools • and applications support • to encourage the growing number of scientists etc wondering what grids are all about • a lot of interest • Collectively we have done substantial work along that path
Challenges • General Grid Challenges • programming; security; deployment; adaptability • making the grid(s) accessible • scientific and broader communities • AP Grid Challenges • populate the testbed • build collaborations • international and regional • tools and applications
… challenges • … AP Grid Challenges • recognize our difference from US / EU grids • diversity; smaller resource budget • make this an opportunity for innovation • Persuade policy makers • that grids are a national investment • in know-how not just infrastructure
