What We Do Learning procedures for 7-1 English
Pen or Pencil • English notebook (from shelf) • Passport • If we are reading a novel, bring that novel • Storage: Binder, Folder, etc • Hi-lighter • Sticky notes Materials
Find your assigned seat and sit in it • Look at overhead and begin warm-up • Keep materials neatly under your desk or in the corner of your desk • Raise your hand if you have a question (even if it’s unrelated to warm-up) • Other To Begin…
Listen During the Lesson If you need materials, wait until the right time and ask someone Focus, contribute, give 100%
When can I… Actions to do without permission Raise your hand if you need to… Go to the restroom/locker/ nurse/etc., and then, wait until it’s a good time! Use Dawg bucks for something Get on a computer/laptop Ask a question Add some input Remind me of something • Get a tissue/blow nose • Throw something away/recycle • Sharpen pencil • Get sick • Turn something in
Turning in work • We will turn in most work at the very beginning of class • If it’s something computer-based, you will generally have about 5 minutes to print during warm-up time and right after • If a piece will be late, tell me, then turn it in with Dawg tickets the next day • Turn in all work to your tray • Put your name on everything!
Which pieces to keep/recycle? • We will keep all formatives this year • We will keep all writing pieces (big and small) • We will keep all projects • I will ask you to keep these in folders in our room • You will file them away once they are passed back • REMIND ME if I start to forget • Keep any handout that you think will be helpful—at least through the entire quarter
TIME If you are talking excessively during class, (when you need to be listening) then as a group you will lose time. Whatever time you lose, you will stay after the bell.
“I have a question…” • Questions are FANTASTIC, but please, please, PLEASE ask them at the appropriate times • You are not paparazzi; I am not a celebrity; you don’t need to follow me
Clean up, Clean up, Everybody Clean up This is OUR room. WE need to keep it nice. • Put away all materials you get out or use • Check underneath desks for scraps/materials • Make sure piles of paper are straightened
End of the Day • We put in effort for the entire class period • I dismiss you, not the bell • Stay in seat until you are dismissed • I will give you pack up time most days, depending on how well we’ve worked • Please remind me of anything I forget
Safety Drills For Fire: • Leave your materials • Silently exit the room; turn right; go out the door in the middle of the hallway. • Go to the first full line available and wait for roll call • Dawg tickets will be awarded when we return if you are quick and quiet For Tornadoes: • Leave your materials • Silently exit room; turn left • Go to the edge of our hallway. • Squish together, duck down, and remain SILENT • We are traditionally AWESOME at this drill; make me proud, and you will earn Dawg tickets when you return!
We will change once a quarter… • Lights • Dawg Stamper • Pass out new papers • Pass out graded papers/collect materials • Office Runner: make copies, return papers, etc. • Time keeper • Objective reader: Read the objective and explain what we’re focusing on each day
Logical Consequences • We’ve discussed what we’d like our learning community to be like • If someone becomes disrespectful, distracting, or just isn’t following our guidelines, I will talk to her and assign a consequence if the behavior does not improve • I will follow the team discipline plan which aligns with the school plan.
Random stuff • If you are tardy, you need to sign in, then begin wherever we are • If you are absent, talk to me the next day. TALK TO ME! Also check the “What Did I Miss?” folders • I have books—in the cabinet. You may check them out • Again, if you need to go somewhere, wait until the right time to ask • If you need help, you may (usually) ask the people around you
Group Work expectations
When in a group: • Take only materials that are necessary for that activity; leave everything else under your desk or off to the side (neatly) • Move quickly; you will usually have a timer or song to guide you • Be polite to each other • Accomplish your task; if you’re off-task, you won’t get to work in groups as much
Listening and Cooperating • Decide who will go first • Both people make eye contact • Listener: nod, smile, show that you hear the speaker • Listener: summarize back what you’ve heard, add a detail, or ask a question
