  2. The Early Years • William Henry Gates III • Born October 28, 1955 in Seattle Washington • Attended a public elementary school and excelled above all expectation

  3. The Early Years • Enrolled into the prestigious and private Lakeside School at age 13. Here he met Paul Allen • Gates and his friends became obsessed with computer time, forming Lakeside Programmers Group

  4. The Early Years • The group was suspended from the computer room for several weeks due to hacking • Computer Center Corporation, C-Cubed, hired the boys to find bugs in their system • C-Cubed goes out of business, forcing the group to look elsewhere for computer time

  5. The Early Years • Information Services Inc. hired the group to create a payroll for their company in exchange for unlimited computer time • Due to their business deal the Lakeside Programmers Group had to become a legal business

  6. The Early Years • As The Lakeside Programmers Group, Gates and his friends created a scheduling system for the Lakeside School when they graduated • The group then became Traf-O-Data, creating a program to measure traffic flow for the Washington States Road Department

  7. The Early Years • Bill Gates enrolled at Harvard in 1973 for pre-law because he was unsure of what he wanted to do • One day when Paul Allen was visiting Gates at Harvard he bought an issue of Popular Electronics that would change their lives forever

  8. The Early Years • This issue featured the first ever microcomputer: MITS’ (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) Altair 8800 • Gates called MITS and told them that he and Allen had written a BASIC for their new computer • This was in fact, untrue, but MITS wanted to see their code

  9. The Early Years • Gates and Allen worked for eight weeks on the code • When it was finally finished, Allen brought it to MITS’ headquarters in Albuquerque, New Mexico • The code worked perfectly, and so Microsoft was born

The beginning of Microsoft • Micro-Soft is founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen • The original name was Micro-Soft which was an abbreviation for microcomputer software • The name changed to Microsoft without the hyphen soon after the founding of the company • Gates dropped out of Harvard during his junior in order to devote energy to Microsoft
