  3. Unbeknownst to most ornithologists, the Dodo was actually a very advanced species, living alone quite peacefully until, in the 1600’s, it was annihilated by men, rats, and dogs. As usual!

  4. Characteristics: wt. est. 30 lbs., flightless, face unfeathered, good runner, probably frugivorous First encounter with Europeans was likely in the late 1500’s when Portuguese merchants stopped to replenish provisions.

  5. Extinct in less than 100 years • Remaining evidence confined to a few bone • fragments, bill, skull and a few feathers.

  7. Natural History features that could benefit the species when encountered by man It is believed that they tasted lousy “The longer they were boiled, the tougher and more uneatable they became” Their name in Dutch was Walckvogel meaning “Disgusting Bird.”
