Chapter 3.6- Chad Stessman
Bohr Model • Niels Bohr- electrons exist in energy levels • Can only be of certain energy-quantized • If electron moves to higher energy level requires quanta of energy.
Ground state- lowest possible energy level • Electrons prefer to stay in ground state • Excited state- when energy excites electron to a higher energy level.
Relaxation • When energy no longer present relaxes to lower energy state • Releases energy equal to energy difference
Certain levels can only handle a certain number of electrons • Indicated by formula 2n • 2, 8, 18
Quantum Mechanical Atom • Bohr suggested electron are particle like • Actually they exist as waves
Schrodinger Equation • German physicist Erwin Schrodinger described electrons as waves and determined probability of finding them in a region of space.
S orbital- spherical shape contains 2 electrons max • P orbital- two lobes, one node, three of these contain 6 electrons max • D orbital- two nodes, five of these, 10 electrons max • F orbital- three nodes, seven of these, 14 electrons max
Shells broken into sub shells • 1 –s • 2 – 2s, 2p • 3 – 3s, 3p, 3d • 4 – 4s, 4p, 4d, 4f
Electron configuration of Periodic Table • Vertical columns- groups or families, similar physical properties • Horizontal rows-periods, properties vary across periods.
