  1. AimHow and why do organisms reproduce?

  2. Asexual Reproduction - Station 1Directions: Go through the PowerPoint and answer the guided questions for this station. Remember exit ticket questions are based on the guided notes

  3. Why do organisms Reproduce? • Reproduction is necessary for continuation of the species.

  4. Types of Animal Reproduction Asexual = 1 - parent Sexual = 2 - parents

  5. What is asexual reproduction? A method of reproduction where 1 parent or individual passes their genes onto their offspring.

  6. How do organisms reproduce asexually? AMOEBA Organisms divide in two, producing two new individuals.

  7. Asexual Reproduction • Binary Fission • Budding • Fragmentation • Cloning (Mitosis)

  8. Asexual Reproduction

  9. Binary Fission Parent has 4 chromosomes • The separation of one parent into two or more individuals of approximately the same size 4 4 4 Each offspring also has 4 chromosomes

  10. Binary Fission in amoeba

  11. Budding • Process in which an offspring is produced by the outgrowth of an existing parent Yeast

  12. Budding in yeast

  13. Fragmentation • Is the breaking of a body piece which develops into a exact complete adult Starfish

  14. Sexual Reproduction-Station 2Directions: Go through the PowerPoint and answer the guided questions for this station. Remember exit ticket questions are based on the guided notes

  15. Sexual Reproduction • Process that involves two parents that combine their genetic material (genes) to produce a new organism (offspring) which differs from the parents.

  16. How do organisms reproduce sexually? • Each parent supplies ½ the genetic information needed to form a complete individual. • The genes are carried in sex cells. • The egg is the sex cell from the mother • The sperm is the sex cell from the father.

  17. Sexual Reproduction • It involves two parents that produces offspring that are not identical to parent • DNA comes from Mom and Dad

  18. Sperm and Egg • Sexual reproduction involves the fusion of sperm cell and egg cell. Fertilization

  19. Male cell- Sperm • Female cell- Egg

  20. Similarities • Some plants and animals actually reproduce sexually and asexually throughout their lives (plants, jellyfish, worms, fungi) • While most bacteria reproduce asexually, some reproduce sexually • Both require passing down genetic information to the offspring

  21. Differences • Asexual reproduction occurs much faster • Sexual reproduction occurs slower because it requires meiosis and fertilization which take more work and time • Offspring are identical to parents in asexual reproduction– could be a problem if parents have genetic errors • Offspring are different from 2 parents in sexual reproduction because both parents give genetic material (genes) to offspring.
