Network • - is a group of computers connected together
Types of Network: • LAN(Local Area Network) - small network that covers a small area, such as an office or school 2. WAN(Wide Area Network) - is a network of geographically distance computers and terminals.
Internet • Is a gigantic computer network that connects computers across the world. World Wide Web • Only one part of the internet. It is a way of accesing the huge collection of information, services and websites available through the internet Website - Specific location on the web that contains a collection of related files and resources by a person, group or organization.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator) • Known as the address of a website Http( Hypertext Transfer Protocol) • Is the protocol, or set of rules, that lets information travel over the web. Four things to connect to the Internet • Computer • ISP ( Internet Service Provider) • Modem • Communications Software e.g. web browser software, email software, and software that allows your computer to another computer
Internet Service Provider - is a company that sells you access to the internet, usually for a monthly fee Modem • Is a device that lets your computer send data to and receive data from other computers or to a network. Types of Modem: 1. Telephone modem – connects your computer to the internet using telephone lines
2. DSL(Digital Subscriber Line) modem - uses your telephone line to supply a high speed internet connection. 100 times faster than a telephone modem 3. Cable modem - uses your cable television lines to supply a high speed internet connection. Web Browser - is a software program that lets you surf the web and interact with websites. e.g. Microsoft Internet explorer, netscape, apple safari, and mozillafirefox
E-Mail (Electronic mail) • Communication sent from one person to another over the internet. Netiquette - refers to the good manners one uses in electronic communications. Spam - Is like junk mail. It is sent in bulk to many people’s e-mail accounts
