Chapter 8 Section 2 Government in Athens • Big Idea: The people of Athens tried many different forms of government before creating a democracy
Creation of City-States • 1200-800 BC known as Greece’s Dark Age (no writing). • Towards the end of the Dark Age people joined together & built a # of independent city-states, beginning ofClassical Age • A City-State starts with a fortress high on top a hill (acropolis) • Life was centered around the agora • Political & Religious meetings • Cities became overcrowded • Colonization was a must • Brought riches back to Greece
Aristocracy & tyrants Rule • Greece was the birthplace of democracy • Early Athens was ruled by a King, later Athens was dominated by aristocrats in the form of an Oligarchy. • Early government, common people had little say. • In 590 B.C., a man named Solon created a set of laws that gave more rights to non-aristocrats citizens. But Athens wasn’t ready to give up rule of Aristocrats • In 546 B.C., Peisistratus became a tyrant, he brought peace & order
Athens creates Democracy • Cleisthenes- “Father of Democracy” • 500 B.C., he overthrew aristocracy rule in Athens • Under his rule, all male citizens could participate in Assembly • & Participate on Juries • Democracy reached a “GOLDEN AGE” under Pericles, paid public officials. • 330B.C., democracy endedwhen MacedoniansconqueredAthens
