The goal of the Advanced Studies Magnet will be to provide students the opportunity to: • Enhance equitable access for all students to high quality academically rigorous program. • Deepen student knowledge of academic subjects in order exceed challenging state academic and achievement standards • Encourage inquiry and exploration

  5. Opportunities for All Students – Climate Nationally recognized and researched based PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports) curriculum will be used universally as the climate curriculum. (PRIDE Matrix) • Clear expectations for student behavior • Clear expectations for student engagement • A safe and respectful environment that centered around the dignity and respect of all.

  8. Opportunities for Teacher Investment Increased allocations that come with increase students population. Additional magnet point allocations. Support to develop the endorsement of all teachers in Gifted and Talented education. Expanded academic opportunities that will assist in the recruiting of other top teacher candidates.

  9. Implementation The implementation of the Pre-AP pathway of the Advanced Studies Magnet –West Ashley will begin with an initial enrollment of one hundred (100) sixth grade students in August 2014. Priority for admissions each year will be as follows: • Priority 1 - will be given to students that meet entrance criteria and reside in the schools attendance zone. • Priority 2 – will be given to students that meet the entrance criteria and reside in Constituent District 10 • Any remaining seats available will be open to students that meet the entrance criteria but live outside of district 10. - Students who qualify from outside the attendance zone must provide their own transportation. • If there are more than 100 students in Priority 1 or 2, then additional seats will be open to meet the demand. • This process will then be continued for the following two years to maintain one hundred students on each grade level for a total of 300 students by 2016-2017.

Admission Criteria • Eligibility criteria for the pool will include • A minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 • Scores in the top quartile (75% or above) of a nationally accepted standardized assessment in both reading and math • The magnet program of Advanced Studies will require • Parent and student contracts. • Students will be expected to maintain a 3.0 GPA • Have minimal absences. • Magnet students will be expected to • Follow the CCSD Code of Student Conduct • Display exemplary behavior

Instructional Format • Small learning communities • School within a school format • Small teacher teams • Highly qualified teachers that are G&T endorsed • The expanded curriculum will use • Inquiry based instructional strategies • Authentic and project based learning that includes field experiences and internships • Additional expertise through Higher Ed. and Business partners.

Rationale • Students having completed high school core classes earlier will enhance their options within the AP spectrum in all areas especially math and science. • Students will have the unique opportunity to take advanced level courses in their junior and senior years, including Advanced Placement (AP) and dual credit college courses, in preparation for the sound foundation needed for a successful college experience.
