Early Life • Born on February 5, 1985, in Madeira, Portugal, a small island off the western coast of the country • He grew up in a largely working class neighborhood, and his home was a small tin roofed shack that overlooked the ocean • Parents are Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro and Jose DinizAveiro • Elder brother named Hugo and two elder sisters, Elma and LilianaCatia • His father was a gardener who often drank too much, and eventually died from kidney problems in 2005 • Ronaldo’s mother worked as a cook and cleaning person to keep the children fed, and maintain some financial stability • Name was inspired by former US president, Ronald Reagan, whom his father was influenced by • It was through his dad’s work as an equipment manager at a boy’s club that Ronaldo was first introduced to the game of soccer • First mastered his skills as a footballer on the island of Madeira • Spent his early years player for his local team, Nacional • At the age of 12 he had already made a name for himself as one of Madeira’s top footballers • Birth Name- Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro • Nicknames- CR7, Cris, Ron, Ronnie, The Sultan of the Stepover (De Castilla)
