  2. Where? Pompeii The site of Pompeii is located in western Italy in a region called Campania, near the Bay of Naples.

  3. Pompeii disaster. Mt. Vesuvius erupted August 24 A.D. 79. The Pompeii people didn’t know that Mt. Vesuvius was a volcano as it hadn’t erupted for around 1,800 years. When Mt. Vesuviuserupted the ashes mixed with rain and formed a mould that would cover the bodies.

  4. Vesuvius Why didn't they flee? Has it erupted since? How many people did it kill? What have they found? The people of Pompeii thought it was a mountain and they moved closer towards it ,not knowing it would kill them. It has erupted more than 50 times since the eruption in 79 AD but never as bad. In 1631, the volcano killed an additional 4000 unsuspecting people. There was around 15,000 to 20,000 killed in Pompeii's disaster and around 50% of children died before reaching puberty. They have found dogs and many human bodies covered in volcanic ashes or burnt.

  5. Roman gods and believes The Romans believed in many different gods and goddesses. For everything imaginable they had a god or goddess in charge. Mars was the god of war. This meant he was good for fighting and also it meant that he had a lot of solders. Diana was the goddess of hunting and a goddess of the moon. Ceres was the goddess of the harvest, always depicted carrying a bundle of grain Minerva was the goddess of wisdom, learning, art crafts and industry. Her symbol was the owl.

  6. Pyroclastic flows Pyroclastic flows are fluidized masses of rock fragments and gases that move rapidly in response to gravity. Pyroclastic flows can form in several different ways.

  7. Plinys the younger account On the 24th of August 79 AD there was a massive volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius near Naples. His account explains the events of his uncle. Although his uncle did not survive the eruption, Pliny the younger received the account from sailors who managed to escape and described the events.
