  1. ReproductionUnit 2 Chapter 4.1 The Nucleus controls the functions of life

  2. Traits are inherited characteristics that are passed on to an offspring from it’s parents.

  3. Organisms are made up of cells.Cells consist of organelles Name 4 parts found in a cell. (pg 113) 1. ___Nucleus_______________________ ___Cytoplasm_____________________ ___Cell membrane_________________ ___Mitochondria____________

  4. What is the nucleus responsible for? Heredity-the process through which patterns of traits are passed on from an individual to its offspring. Cell Function-Every cell in your body has a specific function, yet every body cell contains the same cell parts and organelles.

  5. DNA What does DNA stand for? (pg 115) __Deoxyribonucleic Acid___________ Double Helix In humans there a 3 billion base pairs

  6. When the cell is growing, DNA is uncoiled, and helps make protein. When the cell divides DNA folds into Chromosomes

  7. Comparison of Chromosomes Number in various organisms (pg 117)

  8. What are Genes and what information do they store? (pg 118) Genes are: small segment of DNA located in different places on the chromosomes Genes store information: needed to produce the 90000 to 100000 different proteins produced in different cells

  9. Every chromosome carries thousands of genes and can make thousands of proteins. • The protein that a gene produces determines the function of the cell • Review page 119
