3. At the Centre … the Learner • The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world • IB programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

4. To be awarded an IB Diploma, you need to … • Study six subjects • One subject must be taken from each of • Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature • Group 2: Language Acquisition • Group 3: Individuals and Societies • Group 4: Sciences • Group 5: Mathematics • And a sixth subject either from: • One of the groups above …or from … • Group 6: Arts • Three subjects must be taken at Higher Level • Three subjects must be taken at Standard Level • AND, students must complete the three compulsory elements from ….THE CORE

The Academic Centre – the ‘Core’ • The Extended Essay • A 4,000 word research essay on a topic of your choice, within an IB subject. • Theory of Knowledge • A compulsory course on the nature of knowledge • CAS • Creativity, Action, Service • Approximately 50 hours of each element (150 hours in total), over the two year programme • Activities must be supervised - and reflected on.

Creativity, Action, Service in CIS • Creativity • Perform with our Excellent Theatre Company • Help produce the Yearbook • Participate in Model United Nations – travel to The Hague • Play in our Jazz Band • Write for and edit Labyrinth, the school’s Journal of the Arts • Action • Play for our school teams in basketball, volleyball, football, cross-country, tennis, swimming and participate in NECIS tournaments in Amsterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Luxembourg – and Copenhagen • Service • Join our charitable clubs and travel to Peru, Ghana or Thailand • Participate in Amnesty International • Help coach junior teams • Work for LAP (Learning Assistance Programme) • Participate in our Student Council

7. How is CAS graded? • It isn’t ……. but … • You must show evidence that you have: • Met the Eight Learning Outcomes • Been involved in CAS for 18 months • Reflected thoughtfully on your activities • Completed 150 hours of activity • Had your activities supervised and evaluated NO CAS …NO PASS

8. The Extended Essay • A university level piece of individual research, supervised by one of our teachers, in a subject and topic area of your choice: • Some recent topics include: • Anglo-Danish relations between 1937 and 1948 • Micro-credit services in Kenya • MIDI technology’s role in increasing the reliability of encryption • Is the mafia a reflection of Italian Social Structure? • You are supported through the process by: • an Introduction for Parents and Students, • your supervisor, • our Librarian– an expert of referencing, citations, bibliographies • a visit to Gentofte Library to see their research facilities, • A Coordinator who is an Extended Essay examiner

Theory of Knowledge • A course designed to … • Develop critical thinking • Encourage an interdisciplinary approach to all six subjects • Develop a philosophical understanding of the manner in which we acquire and question ‘knowledge’ • To help you answer the question – ‘Can we Know anything?’ • An examination of the Ways of Knowing • Reason, Sense Perception, Emotion, Language, Intuition, Faith… • An examination of Areas of Knowledge • Natural Sciences, Human Sciences, History, Indigenous Knowledge, Religious Knowledge Systems, Mathematics… • Assessed by: • An essay • A presentation At CIS, we have a range of TOK teachers who are subject experts in a range of disciplines, including languages, the sciences and the humanities.

How do we support you through the Diploma Programme in CIS? • A two-day Diploma Programme retreat in August each year to encourage bonding, interaction and fun! • Two full time counsellors • Two full time Learning Support Staff • Small Advisor groups • ManageBac to help you keep track of your CAS • All students who meet our graduation requirements achieve a High School Diploma, in addition to the IB Diploma • 13 DP teachers who are examiners, senior examiners, workshop leaders and site visitors • Our new Student Leadership Programme supports students in developing their leadership capacity • Presentations from a range of speakers – revision strategies, study skills, alumni discussing career paths, visiting schools, physicists from ESS, authors, artists ….. • And – fun! Movie nights, Hallowe’en celebrations, Secret Santa, Prom, End-of Diploma Famous Water Fight ….
