It’s a heartwarming story the birth of Tilley hats. Like many a fabulous creation it came out of a necessity. The necessity for a hat to stay on a head, that’s Alex Tilley’s head in particular a passionate sailor and adventurer. Of course it’s a lot more than just staying on your head when you sail. It needs to be wind and sun proof, floatable, durable, packable and as it came to be a whole lot more.  In January 1980 Alex set about to make a “proper” sailing hat. Alex took advise from a milliner, a sail maker and sourced a local hat manufacturer. Within 3 months Alex had several prototypes for his family to test on their charter sailing trip in Belize. Several months after their return Alex was happy enough to add his name on the latest prototype. With community support Alex started to sell his hat from the family home in Toronto.  Alex Tilley  Perhaps   Alex’s   biggest   coup   was   sending   the   editor   of “Yachting” magazine a hat and in return a third of a page editorial was written on Alex and his hat. Great exposure to the sailing community and 1 year later thousands of hats were being sold at Boat Show trade shows where Alex and the family would set up their Tilley Hat stand.  TILLEY T4 COTTON DUCK ­ KHAKI ­ OLIVE ­ THE ORIGINAL  Several attempts at introducing the same formula in shorts as he created in hats should have worked but proved a frustrating and costly venture.  In 1983 when Canada was represented in the America Cup, Alex sent the Canadian
