These batteries are also easily scalable in parallel up to ten batteries, making them a great solution for OEMs with multiple vehicles that have different range and performance needs. In 2022 ABS will launch our first product in our high voltage Proliance Intelligent Battery Series™ family of batteries beginning with a 350V 50kWh pack targeted for commercial vehicles. Proliance batteries are designed to be an “off-the-shelf” family of products that are designed to automotive safety, performance, quality, and manufacturing standards. They range from a 350V 50kWh and a 100kWh battery for light and medium duty commercial vehicles to a 665V 110kWh battery for use in medium and heavy-duty trucks and buses and other commercial vehicles. These batteries will offer a standardized pack that is fully integrated with BMS, electronics and thermal management system. Considering the current pandemic, what initial challenges did you face and how did you drive ABS to sustain operations while ensuring the safety of your employees? Being an experienced leader, share your opinion on how the adoption of modern technologies like AI and ML has impacted the development and manufacturing of advanced batteries and how is ABS riding the technology wave? Like every other company out there the biggest challenge we faced when the pandemic began was simply the uncertainty. What would this do to the emerging electrification market? Would it slow or would it accelerate? Would it have other unexpected impacts? AI and ML are finding more and more applications both in the engineering stages of battery development but also in the aftermarket, service, warranty, and lifetime management of li-ion batteries. In the development side we see both technologies being used in areas like testing and characterization. With these types of questions in mind we took a conservative view and moved our workforce to a “work from home” model immediately and we continue to allow many of our team members to work remotely. Since we try to live the value that our people are the most important asset we have, we did not layoff any direct employees during this period. With so much uncertainty in the world we wanted our employees to have some level of security and safety. During battery testing you collect a mountain of data, but the question has always been “how do we use it?”. With new AI and ML processes we are finding it possible to shorten the development timeframe by analyzing the mountains of data we produce. On the aftermarket side more and more customers are linking their vehicles data with the cloud, including the battery data which allows us to develop solutions to help keep the battery and operator updated. At the same time, we were extremely successfully in engaging with new customers via electronic methods and were awarded some of our biggest projects during this period. This drove us to begin a very active hiring process which has allowed us to nearly triple in size since the onset of COVID-19. Using this type of data, it is possible for fleet owners to optimize the usage of the vehicles in their fleets to maximize the life. It is possible for them to identify battery issues before they occur, allowing them to schedule service time before a vehicle breaks down while in service. My advice to budding entrepreneurs is to never be afraid of taking on a challenge, never be afraid of making a mistake, never say no to any challenge that you believe in. Take the lead and the rest of the world with follow you. How do you envision scaling ABS’ operations and offerings in 2022 and beyond? 2022 will be a big year for ABS as we continue to ramp our Alliance family of low voltage batteries, but also as we launch our first high voltage custom battery pack program alongside of our first Proliance battery. But we are also working hard on some new product developments that will give us entry into new markets including offering a new Grid Energy Storage System that is expected to launch in late 2023.
