Problems in a stable environment – what to do? • Can you have problems in a microbiological stable system? • Shouldyou in the name of diversityrely on yourstablility to deal with the problems? - Yes! - No!
The RAS as an organism • A RAS is more than an ecosystem • Youneed to manageboth the system • And the single units especiallyfish tank
Problems canrelate to: • Pathogens • Specific • Opportunistic • General system management • Biological • Physcal/chemical • Accidents
Bacterial gill disease Acute Clinicalsigns of intoxication, fishexamination - gillinfection. In the microscope uniform bacterialgrowth.Thisrelate to single tank problems, mainly spilled feed. Stop feedingevaluatestressors, correct and treat the fish. Rarelyspreads to other tanks unlesstheyarealsostressed.
Bacterial gill disease Acute Clinicalsignslike in previous slide. But often with debris in the gillmucus. Microscopic a variety of bacterial types + eventuallyprotozoan, small arthropods and nematodes. Spillover of water from the watertreatment, especiallydenitrification. Thoroughexamine filter handling procedures, and system errors. Stop feeding, treataffected tanks, eventually all tanks as precaution. Oftenseveraldaystreatment at a levelfishcantolerate
Treatment in RAS • Peraceticacid • Potent, but needgoodtreatment procedures to getadecuatetreatmentconcentrations in substatial time. • Hydrogenperoxide • Chloramin • Formaldehyde • Salt
Treatment in RAS - Side effects • Fish: Acute or chronic • Always start in the lowdosage range, in a few tanks. Good idea to getidea of dosagelevel in your system beforeyouget problems. • Filter: Ammonia, NO2 • Rarely a problem unlesstreatment with highdosagesdirectlyinto the filter, or veryimmature filters. • System: Change in equilibrium • Normally a goodthing if youcantreat – change and let the system get back in balance again
