HARVESTING OUR NATURAL RESOURCES The Primary Industry In Canada
What is a Resource? • A Resource is something a country has that can be sold for money • Canada is a very rich country, in part because it has so many resources! BUT WAIT! There’s a Catch! • Canada needs other countries to BUY our resources • If we don’t sell our resources, we are in trouble.
Types of Resources Canada has 3 Types of Natural Resources… • Renewable Resources • Non-Renewable Resources • Flow Resources
Renewable Natural Resources • RENEWABLE RESOURCES replace themselves after they have been used. • Examples are farm products, fish and forests • Animals can be born and used, fish reproduce, and trees grow back after they have been cut down.
Non-Renewable Resources • NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES are resources that are gone forever once they have been used. • Examples are minerals and fuels such as oil, and natural gas • These resources are made by the earth slowly over thousands of years…once they are gone, they cannot come back.
Flow Resources • NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES are resources that are gone forever once they have been used. • Examples are running water (rivers), wind and ocean currents • These things exist without human help
Examples of Natural Resources Farming • Farmers can grow plants (crops) that can be eaten by humans • Farmers can raise animals that can produce milk products or can be used for wool or meat (livestock) • Farming is usually called AGRICULTURE
Examples of Natural Resources Farming (Continued) • Farming has changed a lot over the years, thanks to machines that makes things quicker and easier. This change is called MECHANIZATION (the use of machines). • Machines make it easier to plow fields, harvest crops, milk cows and feel animals. • Mechanization also make it possible for farmers to have bigger farms so that they can sell more food to people.

Examples of Natural Resources Forestry • Forestry is an industry that cuts down trees and turns them into wood and paper products • To cut down a tree, we used to have to use saws and axes. Now it is much faster because of MECHANIZATION.
Forestry Clear Cutting • The modern way to cut down trees is called CLEAR CUTTING. • CLEAR CUTTING is cutting down all the trees in an area, even the really small ones and the very old ones. • This is very easy and makes cutting fast. • Clear Cutting can be bad; it destroys habitat for wildlife and can damage aboriginal lands and ways of life
Mineral Natural Resources • MINERALS are very important non-renewable resources • MINERALS are natural things that look like crystals • We can use minerals to make things (steel), carry electricity and water (copper), fertilize land (potash), and make energy (oil and gas) • Read pages 125-126

Flow Resources - Water • WATER is the most important FLOW resource in Canada • We use water to drink and wash, but also to make food and generate electricity • Canada has more FRESH WATER (drinkable, non-salt water) than any other country in the world • Look at Table p128 (top) • Read ‘Bow River Diversion Project’
HYROELECTRIC POWER • Most of Ontario’s power comes from Hydroelectic (hydro) power. • Water turns wheels and makes electricity! HOW A HYDRO DAM WORKS SIR A. BECK STATION @ NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO
NATURAL RESOURCES taboo • Divide Class into 2 teams! Here’s what we do… • Team one will get a word, and team two has to guess what it is… • Team one will explain things about the word, but can’t actually say the word. • Team two tries to guess what Natural Resources they are talking about!
Natural Resources Taboo Check this out… • Team one is given the word ‘Banana’ (and a picture of what it looks like) and a few TABOO WORDS (words you can’t say) • Team one chooses someone to give details about the banana without actually saying the word ‘banana’… • Team one also can’t say the TABOO words fruit, delicious or healthy • They might say ‘Yellow’, ‘curved’, ‘ripe’, to try to help the other team
Natural Resources TABOO • While they do this, the other team has ONE MINUTE to try to shout out the answer! • Once they get the answer they get 30 seconds to tell the class if it is a renewable, non-renewable or flow resource for A bonus point! • Then switch teams. • THE TEAM WITH THE MOST CORRECT ANSWERS WINS!!!!!!!!!! • The winning team will get a prize at the end of the week….
Review: Types of Resources • RENEWABLE RESOURCES replace themselves after they have been used. • NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES are resources that are gone forever once they have been used. • NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES are resources that are gone forever once they have been used.
