  1. Project: IEEE P802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: [Merger Proposal #2 Affirmation of Commitment to the 802.15.3 MAC] Date Submitted: [July 12, 2004] Source: [Matthew Welborn] Company [Freescale Semiconductor] Address [8133 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, VA 22180] Voice:[703-269-3000] Re: [Response to TG3a Chair request for affirmation of commitment.] Abstract: [The authors of the Merger #2 Proposal (DS-UWB) affirm their commitment to working in good faith with the 802.15 TG3a to develop an Alternate PHY layer Standard that meets all of the requirements for the authorized work project. These include meeting the technical and application requirements identified by the TG 3a members, as well as the requirements entailed by the IEEE 802 Standards Association] Purpose: [To help the TG3a members understand the intentions of the Merger #2 Proposal team and ensure a clear understanding of the technical and legal requirements for the TG3a Alternate PHY project.] Notice: This document has been prepared to assist the IEEE P802.15. 2. Requirements for TG3a PHY Regarding the 15.3 MAC • Extracts from the various documents governing the TG3a Alt-PHY project and direct responses from the Merger #2 Proposal team affirming commitment to the requirements contained therein • List of requirement sources • 15.3a Project Authorization Request (PAR) • 5 Criteria Document • 15.3a Requirements Document • 15.3a Selection Criteria • 802.15.3 Standard (PICS) Welborn , Freescale Semi

  3. Requirements from the 15.3a PAR 13. Scope of Proposed Project: • This project will define an alternative PHY clause, in the frequency range of up to 24GHz, for a higher data rate amendment to standard 802.15.3. 14. Purpose of Proposed Project: • The intent of this project is to provide a standard for a low complexity, low cost, low power consumption alternate PHY for 802.15.3 (comparable to the goals for 802.15.3). The data rate will be high enough, 110 Mb/s or more (see 18a), to satisfy an evolutionary set of consumer multi-media industry needs for WPAN communications. The project will address the requirements to support multimedia data types in multiple compliant co-located systems and also coexistence (18b). Welborn , Freescale Semi

  4. Merger Proposal #2 Response • The Authors of the Merger #2 Proposal (DS-UWB) affirm their commitment to creating an alternative PHY for the 802.15.3 Standard • Specifically, we are committed to work to create a low complexity, low cost, low power alternate PHY for 15.3 to satisfy the requirements for WPAN multi-media communications applications Welborn , Freescale Semi

  5. Requirements from the TG3a 5 Criteria Document 2.0 COMPATIBILITY IEEE 802 defines a family of standards. All standards shall be in conformance with IEEE 802.1 Architecture, Management and Inter-working. All LLC and MAC standards shall be compatible with ISO 10039, MAC Service Definition, at the LLC/MAC boundary. Within the LLC Working Group there shall be one LLC standard, including one or more LLC protocols with a common LLC/MAC interface. Within a MAC Working Group there shall be one MAC standard and one or more Physical Layer standards with a common MAC/Physical layer interface. Each standard in the IEEE 802 family of standards shall include a definition of managed objects, which are compatible with OSI systems management standards. Note: This requirement is subject to final resolution of corrections and revision to current ISO 10039, currently inconsistent with ISO 8802 series standards. The MAC (Medium Access Control) Layer of the Alternate PHY Standard will be compatible with the IEEE 802 requirements for architecture, management, and inter-networking and will be based upon the IEEE802.15.3 MAC. Welborn , Freescale Semi

  6. Merger Proposal #2 Response • The Authors of the Merger #2 Proposal (DS-UWB) affirm their commitment to creating an Alternate PHY standard that will meet the IEEE 802 requirements for architecture, management and internetworking and which will be based on the 802.15.3 MAC Welborn , Freescale Semi

  7. Requirements from the TG3a Requirements Document 9.0 Supplements to 802.15.3 functionality • It is envisioned that the alt-PHY project will allow supplements to 802.15.3. In addition to the PHY itself, the project may include MAC functionality necessary to support the selected PHY. • It is required that the alt-PHY operate with the 802.15.3 MAC without fundamental change in operation. It is also required that any enhancements or modifications are enabled by reference to alt-PHY specific PIB parameters. • As an example, from the project request, document 01/532r0 (alt-PHY study group proposal), location awareness is considered as a possible feature of certain alt-PHY technologies and is an example of supplemental MAC functionality. Such a provision may be supported by the PHY PIB parameters in the proposed 802.15.3 standard MAC or via supplemental MAC capabilities provided by the alt-PHY project. Welborn , Freescale Semi

  8. Merger Proposal #2 Response • The Authors of the Merger #2 Proposal (DS-UWB) affirm their commitment to creating an alt-PHY that operates with the 802.15.3 MAC without fundamental change in its operation. • We are committed to creating and alt-PHY that requires nothing beyond supplemental MAC functionality based on specific alt-PHY technology Welborn , Freescale Semi

  9. Requirements from the TG3a Selection Criteria 4. MAC Protocol Supplements 4.1    Alternate PHY Required MAC Enhancements and Modifications 4.1.1. Definition • Supplements and modifications to the MAC may be required to accommodate the alternate PHY. It is preferred that the supplements be additions which expand the solution capability as opposed to changes in the MAC that represent an alternative way to do a particular function. Welborn , Freescale Semi

  10. Merger Proposal #2 Response • The Authors of the Merger #2 Proposal (DS-UWB) affirm their commitment to creating an alt-PHY that operates with the 802.15.3 MAC without fundamental change in its operation • In particular, We are committed to creating and alt-PHY that supplements 802.15.3 MAC functionality only, and does not contain any changes in the MAC that represent an alternative way to do a particular function Welborn , Freescale Semi

  11. Merger Proposal #2 Support for Simultaneous Operating Piconets • The Authors of the Merger #2 Proposal (DS-UWB) affirm their commitment to creating an alt-PHY that operates with the 802.15.3 MAC that provides the simultaneous operating piconet (SOP) capabilities as required by the 15.3a Requirements document and Selection Criteria • In particular, we are committed to creating and alt-PHY that support SOP operation with a minimum of four supported SOP (optional support for up to a total of 12 piconets at this time) • This support includes the required functionality to support all security features provided by the 802.15.3a MAC Welborn , Freescale Semi

  12. The 15.3a PICS • The 802.15.3 Protocol implementation conformance statement (PICS) define which MAC sub-layer functions & frames are required for compliant 15.3/15.3a devices • These PICS specify MAC functions such as • Device association and dissociation • Medium access techniques • Beacon generation & support • Etc. • There functions are fundamental to the MAC operation as defined in the 15.3 standard and must be supported by any Alt-PHY standard developed for use with the 15.3 MAC Welborn , Freescale Semi

  13. Merger Proposal #2 Response • The Authors of the Merger #2 Proposal (DS-UWB) affirm their commitment to creating an Alternate PHY standard that will provide the functionality required to implement a compliant 15.3a device based on the 15.3 MAC, as defined in the 802.15.3 PICS specification Welborn , Freescale Semi
