  2. Course goal • After completing the course , we will have clear concept on : • What is Computer? • Basic parts of a computer system(I/O device ,CPU,...) • Hardware & Software and their classifications • Different types of hardware & software • Basic knowledge on the internet • Basic knowledge on the multimedia

  3. Recommended Text • Introduction to Computers – • Peter Norton, McGraw Hill, International Edition • Computer Fundamentals – • Dr. M. Lutfar Rahman and Dr. Alamgir Hossain. • The contents from other books will be presented depending on the requirements of the course.

  4. Lecture 1Introduction to computer system

  5. Objective • After this lecture , students are going to know: • What is meant by ‘computer’ • Why should we call it a system • Computer system units/major hardware classification • Characteristics • Work flow of a computer • Components of the system

  6. Different looks of computer Desktop Laptop

  7. Computer system Monitor System Unit Speaker Keyboard Mouse

  10. Computer System • What do we understand by the word ‘computer’? • The modern definition of a computer is an electronic device that performs calculations on data, presenting the results to humans or other computers in a variety of (hopefully useful) ways and store it . • Not just a single machine but a combination of many devices and instructions to operate those devices. • The devices(Hardware) and the instructions(Software) all together make a computer. • So it is a system not just a device.

  11. Characteristics of a computer • Millions and billions times faster than human brain • Does not get tired • Does not produce wrong output unless there is something wrong with data or instruction set • Limited memory • No independent thinking or reasoning

  12. Work flow Process Output Input • Input data from disk, keyboard or other storage media • Process data • Output results to display screen, disk or other media

  13. Components • Basic components of a computer system are • Hardware • Software • Human ware

  14. Hardware • Refers to machines or physical equipment that performs the basic functions of data processing. • Example: • Printer, Keyboard, Mouse etc.

  15. Computer System Units • The generic computer contains • a computational unit • Input devices(keyboard, mouse). • Output devices(monitors, printers). • The computational unit is the computer's heart, and usually consists of a central processing unit (CPU), a memory, and an input/output (I/O) interface.

  16. Software • Computer programs • Sets of instructions which directs a computer to perform certain function. • Programs are referred to as software • Software is of two types: • System Software ( helps computer to perform tasks, e.g. Windows XP, Vista,Linux etc.) • Application Software ( helps by performing user applications, Microsoft power point , windows media player etc.)

  17. Human ware • Refers to the persons who design, program and operate a computer. • Three principal positions: • System analysts • Defines the application problem • Determines systems specifications • Recommends hardware and software • Designs information-processing procedures • Programmer • Prepare programs based on the specification made by systems analyst • Computer operator • Performs a series of well-defined tasks to keep the computer operating at maximum efficiency

  18. Question session Please feel free to ask any questions …….. Thank You
