ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES COMMUNITY COLLEGE:Current and Future Plans for RE&EE Courses
STRATEGIC GOAL #6: (SVGCC Strategic Plan • Embrace the National Development Agenda (NESDP 2013-2025) and play a critical role in advancing/driving it This goal is intended to position the SVGCC to address and embrace the key aspects of the National Development Agenda including Poverty Reduction, Health and Wellness, Environmental Protection and enabling each citizen to maximise their potential.
Actions • Develop and implement a Green Agenda towards enforcing strict rules on littering, recycling and waste reduction on all college campuses • Become an active proponent of Disaster Risk Reduction through its integration in curriculum and whole campus measures
Past and Current Efforts • 2009: 3.4 kw PV system linked to the grid (UNESCO Project and installed by students and lecturer) • 2010: Workshop held at SALCC attended by KenroyQuestelles (lecturer) and then Dean Joseph Mapp • Proposal for a PV curriculum at Community Colleges • SVGCC made the decision to integrate a Renewable Energy Technology course within the Electrical Engineering Programme
Past and Current Efforts contd. • 2011: PV training workshop held in Grenada provided insight into PV at TAMCC and other colleges as well as industry • The course previously developed in 2010 was discontinued at SVGCC for lack of equipment and the theoretical path it had taken
2012: As part of a EC$70,000 project funded by the Austrian Development Agency • Equipment and materials supplied by the Caribbean Renewable Energy Programme (CREDP) and the German Institute for Technical Cooperation(GIZ) • This enabled the continuance of the Renewable Energy course
Course content • UNIT 1 INTRODUCTION TO RENEWABLE ENERGY (10 HRS) • UNIT 2 PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS, MODULES OR PANEL, ARRAYS (10 HRS) • UNIT 3 STAND ALONE PHOTOVOLAIC SYSTEMS (15 HRS)
UNIT 4 GRID-TIED PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS (15 HRS) • UNIT 5 INSTALLATION, COMMISSIONING AND MAINTENANCE OF STAND- ALONE AND GRID-TIED PV SYSTEMS (20HRS)
2013: Dr. Annie Egan (Australian Volunteer) joined the SVGCC and assisted in the development of a second course that focused on other renewable energy: Geothermal, wind and biomass (course has not been delivered as yet. Dr. Egan was recalled after the Australian Government changed their policy on regions of focus)
Students engaging the public at an energy awareness exhibition
2016: The Environmental Club at DASGS, SVGCC embarked on a UNDP project (US$25,000) • Installation of a 22kW PV system
New CAPE Green EngineeringSyllabus (projecting Sept. 2017) • Unit 1 (Introduction to Green Engineering): • Module 1 – Concepts and Issues • Module 2 – Theoretical Framework of Green Engineering • Module 3 – Green Engineering in Practice • Unit 2 (Application of Green Engineering Principles): • Module 1 – Utilisation of Sustainable Materials and Energy • Module 2 – Sustainable Designs • Module 3 – Green Engineering Solutions
Biogas project • SilkeRothenberger of GIZ met yesterday with one of our lecturers. • The setting up of an organic farm • A collaboration between a nearby farmer and the college to operate a biogas unit
