Stage 2 – Normans Take Over • Normans took control of Dublin & began to extend it from 1170 • By 14th Century Normans had developed important trading links with England – port of Dublin grew in importance– ( Economic Activity ) • Dublin Castle was built & became centre of administration – English rule in Ireland - ( Administrative activity )
Stage 3 Georgian Dublin 1700’s • Dublin Port, the Grand Canal & Royal Canal built to improve trade – ( Economic Activity ) • Manufacturing industries developed eg. Guinness Brewery – ( Economic Activity ) • Parliament was established in Dublin until 1800 – ( Administrative Activity ) • Had become one of Europe's largest and most beautiful cities with broad streets ( O’Connell St.) & elegant squares (Merrion Sq.)
Stage 4 19th Century • Construction of railway opened up new markets for trade - ( Economic activity ) • Mass migration of poor country people into Dublin resulted in overcrowded slum dwellings - ( Social activity) • Wealthy people moved to the suburbs of Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey and Killiney - (Social activity) • Decline of Georgian Dublin
Stage 5 - 20th Century up to 1990 • Most rapid population growth • Leading manufacturing and commercial centre (Economic activity) • Capital city – seat of Ireland’s Parliament – DailEireann (Administrative activity) • Migration of people from city centre to the suburbs caused Dublin to expand outwards – urban sprawl ( Social activity )
Stage 6 - Celtic Tiger Ireland 1990 - Present • Dublin has become Europe’s centre for financial services and business applications – ( Economic activity ) • Urban dev and construction of expensive apts in city centre has brought wealthy people back into the city - ( Social activity ) • Public transport has been upgraded by the Dart and Luas ( Economic activity ) • Ireland’s primate city.
