  2. Cost effective assessment of the commercial attractiveness of IP • Do the right things • How do we assess the commercial merit of an opportunity and we are capable of commercialising them? • How do we decide with our limited resource on which opportunities to focus on? • How do we ensure that we exploit any opportunity to its greatest potential? • Do things right • How do we undertake the assessment in a timely and cost effective manner? • How do we ensure that we have real insight and intelligence on the opportunity?

  3. But ... • Data-information-insight is only of value if it allows you to make a better decision • The more detailed / specific the data = greater the cost • True insight only can be only be obtained by interacting directly with the market

IP Pragmatics’ assessment methodologies • New opportunity assessment: • What is the commercial merit of a new opportunity and how can we best exploit it? • Portfolio assessment: • Which of the opportunities in our portfolio should we focus on? • Capability assessment: • Where are the largest commercial opportunities within the research group, institute, university etc?

  5. New Opportunity Assessment

  6. Portfolio Assessment • Normally an annual assessment of the complete IP portfolio • Structured discussion of each opportunity in the portfolio • Overall scoring of commercial attractiveness: • IP strength • Commercial potential • Development requirements • Prioritise opportunities which need: • Focusing on over the next 12 months • ‘dropping’ • Strengthening
