Whatwestudied: Particles and Interactions. In the universe, we actually know 4 forces: - the Gravitational Force, with maybethe Gravitons as mediator particles. - the Electromagnetic Force, with the Photons as mediator particles. - the Weak Force, with the W+ and the W- as mediator particles. - the Strong Force, with the Z Gluons as mediator particles. In the morning, scientistsexplainedthattheredifferentparticles and their interactions were. The masterclass’smorning : in the skin of a student of physics Alexia Léon Lorène Genot CERN membersmay have discovered the Higgs boson :the one that couldexplain the mass of particles. At the begining, identifyingparticleswasdifficult but step by stepweunderstood how to do itand weenjoyedit. 21 mars 2013 - DNL 1S euro physique-chimie - LEM - M.Dieumegard – M.Boussange - Montluçon
The masterclass’safternoon : in the skin of a particlephysicist Weconsiderthismasterclass bas a valuableexperienceevenif itwasprettyspecific. Pierre Dieumegard - Pierre Martin For twohourswedid the job of a real particlephysicist. Wehad to find WW candidates throughthe particlesthatwerebornaftertwo protons hadcollided. 21 mars 2013 - DNL 1S euro physique-chimie - LEM - M.Dieumegard – M.Boussange - Montluçon
Detection of particles We trained to spot various kinds of particles (like muon, electron, Higgs boson, neutrino…) thanks to their tracks in the detector.. We found the activity intersting. Thanks to the explanations given at the begining of the afternoon, we managed to find particles. We particulary enjoyed having informations, advices and guidance in English, during the afternoon. The videoconference: an international event POPOVICI Ioana FANJUL Jeanna • Several other groups in France (and one in Germany) worked on the same topic as we did in the meantime: • Marseille (two groups) • Orsay • Dortmund, Germany • Grenoble LENGTH: 1 hour and 5 minutes From 15:55 to 17:00 We learned a lot of interesting and new things that will help us in the future. We were very excited to communicate with professionals in Europe. 21 mars 2013 - DNL 1S euro physique-chimie - LEM - M.Dieumegard – M.Boussange - Montluçon
Assessment of the day: This was very motivating as we learnt some new information about particle physics and CERN. The afternoon was much better since we worked with computers, on data and results from CERN. Afterwards we took part in an international videoconference.
