He and his wife have five daughters. • Themes: This was one of the first musicals to deal with some very complicated and difficult themes related to life as a Jew growing up in a foreign land. • Persecution • Poverty • Tradition of the “old world” vs. • the influences of a changing society

Musical Background • Musical adapted by the story • “Tevye and His Daughters” • by Sholom Aleichem, a Yiddish writer • This musical was originally believed to have a limited scope of interest, but ended up being one of the most successful Broadway musicals ever. • It opened on Septemer 22, 1964 and ran for 3,242 straight performances
