  3. Groundbreaking

  4. Sustainable Construction • Green Building” is the practice of increasing the efficiency of buildings and their use of energy, water, and materials, and reducing building impacts on human health and the environment through better design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal. • The complete building life cycle!

  5. Certifications • Florida Green build • http://www.floridagreenbuilding.org/db/ FGBC was conceived and founded in the belief that green building programs will be most successful if there are clear and meaningful principles on which "green" qualification and marketing are based. We are a membership-based organization governed by a Board of Directors and corporate officers who are elected by the general membership. • USGBC (LEED) • http://www.usgbc.org/

  6. Green Building Effective green building can lead to: • Reduced operating costs • Improved public and occupant health • Reduced environmental impact

  7. Green Building The philosophy of green building practices is to design a building is in harmony with the natural features and resources surrounding the site. Practitioners of green building often seek to achieve not only ecological but aesthetic harmony between a structure and its surrounding natural and built environment.

  8. Our Vision To become a centerpiece of research, application and trends, as related to the construction profession and industry. A demonstration house permits the engagement of the community and industry on multiple projects and topics relating to structures and life in Northwest Florida. The economic implications of sustainable, durable housing and resources continue to dominate the dialogue about the quality of life in our region. Through this initiative, UWF and supporting partners become the leaders in this discussion, facilitating a wide-ranging set of opportunities that focus on improving the community, construction-related industries, and general life in the region. Overall, the home will provide educational opportunities in areas of energy efficiency, windstorm mitigation, sustainable and green building and lastly, quality construction techniques and materials.

  11. Overview rendering

  12. Not just green…. • There’s a focus as well on areas of: • energy efficiency • windstorm mitigation • quality construction techniques • materials

  13. Status • http://uwf.edu/besthouse/index.cfm • Completion of design by Spencer Maxwell Bullock Architects • Completion of donations • Funding and materials

  14. Why should a homeowner build green? Green buildings typically are: • Aesthetically pleasing • Healthy • Environmentally sound • Resource and energy efficient • Made to last for generations

  15. Flourescents • If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars. • http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=cfls.pr_cfls

  16. Statistics • In the United States alone, buildings account for: •    65% of electricity consumption,•    36% of energy use,•    39% of greenhouse gas emissions,•    30% of raw materials use,•    30% of waste output • (136 million tons annually), and 12% of potable water consumption. • Source: USGBC
