INTRODUCTION • Simputer aims at developing low cost device that can pervade the rural landscap, especially in the third world countries • The simputer is a low cost portable alternative to pc’s ,by which the benefits of the computer can reach the common man • The key to bridging the digital device is to have shred devices that permit truly simple and natural user interfaces based on sight , touch and audio.

  4. Def:-”Simputer is a self contained handheld computer designed for in environments where computing devices such as personal computers are deemed inappropriate.” • Due to the low cost it was deemed appropriate to bring computing power to the developing countries.

  5. AFFORDABLE COMPUTING • The projected cost of the simputer is about Rs 9000 • The smartcard feature that the simputer provides enables the simputer to be shared by the community • This feature allows for personal information management at the individual level

HISTORY • The simputer project was conceived during the organisation of the global village, conducted during bangalore IT.com event in october 1998. • Expanding these discussions, introduced the word “simputer” as an obvious twist on the word computer. • Simple,Inexpensive,Multi-lingual,People’s “uter”-derived from the computer

CREATING A TEXT • There are two options : • Soft keyboard can be brought up on the touch screen and you poke at it to enter one character at a time. • To use a novel character entry software called Tap-a-Tap • Tap-a-Tap is a character input application, similar to but distinct from from graffitty characters are entered using a 3x3 grid by tapping grid interiors

  9. Hardware downloads of the simputer • The simputer run son the processor called Intel-strong arm chip which is known for its low power consumption • Simputer uses the AAA batteries

  10. IML • IML-”Information Markup Language” • The language has been created to suit the unique needs of the simputer and simputer is however XML based rather than HTML • This is because IML is XML application and so does follow the internet standards

  11. SMARTCARD • The smart card is the basic method by which the simputer can be personalised so that it can be passed to others • A users profile can also be stored in the smartcard
