New Pedagogical Approach At Stovner sixth-form College Manchester Wednesday 2 November 2005
The city of Oslo • Aim is to provide bespoke education for every student. • Schools need pedagogical development, using ICT as an important ingredient • ICT investments in 20% of the schools each year
Point of departure • A very mixed student body as regards to social and ethnic backgrounds and learning abilities. • A majority had a minority language background • Applicants had on average a very low score from secondary school • A great number of students were not motivated and had concentration difficulties • A great number of drop-outs during the year • Few applicants had Stovner College as their first choice
Goals • To increase the number of students leaving the college with a valid certificate of secondary education (i.e. university entrance qualifications) • To attract academically stronger students • To achieve that students find school less boring • To achieve that teachers find the school day more stimulating and exciting
Investments • Reconstruction of classrooms • A new computer hall with 120 desks with a computer ready for the students in 2002 • Two new classrooms each with 30 desks and computers • 40 new computers for the teachers • An additional computer hall with 80 desks and computers ready in 2003 • The third computer hall with 120 desks and computers ready in 2004
What has been accomplished so far: • Teachers working in teams in all subjects • A new class structure. Groups of twelve students now have their own tutor • Each student has his own desk with his own computer • All subjects are taught only once a week and smaller subjects have been organised into half year courses • By using the scool`s VLE Fronter each student is offered individual tutoring
To what degree do teachers find school more engaging and stimulating?
The new applicants • 2002/2003 56 applicants had Stovner Upper Secondary School as their first choice 70 out of 120 students had entrance score below 36 • 2003/2004 125 applicants had Stovner upper Secondary School as their first choice Lowest entrance score was 36 • 2004/2005 141 applicants had Stovner upper Secondary School as their first choice • 2005/2006 lowest entrance score was 55
National school of Demonstration2003-2005 • Said by the Jury: With a student body of more than 80% of pupils with a minority language background, the college has in an exceptional way demonstrated how innovative ways of organising teaching can improve the quality of students` learning. The college has been outstanding in the field of creativity and innovation.
InnsIKT • Fronter chosen as VLE for Oslo`s 175 schools, over 67 000 students and 11 500 teachers. • All 175 schools rolled out by the end of 2005 .
Whats next? • 2005/2006 The whole College will parttake in NPA • Content development • The school environment • Students` participation • Portfolio assesment
