10 OCTOBER 2018 Google to Shutdown Google Plus Amid Security Concerns Written by thinkwik Leave a Comment Google, the giant multinational American tech company, has taken a huge decision of shutting down the Google social media platform, Google Plus for the consumers on Monday, October 8, 2018. After years of considerations, Google Company finally made this decision and accepted that Google Plus failed to gain such an engagement that the company had expected. As soon as the news of Google Plus shutting down spread in the market, the curiosity among the consumers has taken a major hype. While some are speculating the Google Plus data breach is the reason behind the Google+ shutting
down, others are guessing that the unpopularity of the Google+ among all the leading social platforms could be the possible reason for this decision. Google, however, said that the company is facing significant challenges to keep up the product as per the consumers’ acceptance and expectations. In addition, Google reveals that the decision has been taken after reviewing the access of third-party developer to the Google account and the Android device's data. Notably, Google has initiated an internal investigation via its Project Strobe to analyse the security controls and decreasing user engagement owing to the privacy concerns among the users.
The whole scenario has given birth to so many other serious issues, especially related to privacy concern and security. Along with shutting down Google Plus, another major statement that created a fuss is when Google announce to limit the apps that will be able to seek permission to use the data stored in the Gmail Accounts of the users. According to Google, it will allow only those apps to access the data, which are directly improving the email operations and functionality. This decision created a serious chaos among the consumers for their data protection till date. It’s true to a very large extent that the apps we are using for years must have misused our data up to now. Else, Google wouldn’t have bound to make such changes regarding the apps permission. Another point that is equally important is the SMS and Call Logs permission that almost every Android app asks for, irrationally. From a music player to a camera, torch, wallpaper or thousands of other apps available in the Google Play Store, no matter what
sort of application you use, every app in your phone has the access of your contacts and SMS. Hence, to allow users the freedom to select the apps they want to share their contact and SMS access with, Google has made a decision to provide its consumers with excessive data -sharing control. According to Google, you will now receive an individual pop-up for each and every permission requested by the apps. Though this will take a bit more time to install and provide permission to apps to access your data, however, it will also provide you more flexibility to authorise only certain apps to use your data. Notably, Google accepted the fault in the social networks API that is believed to affect as many as half a million potential Google Plus users’ accounts. According to Google, the company has detected the flaw somewhere in March 2018 – even before the Google I/O 2018 – and patched the issue soon after. However, the company decided to keep the issue secret. After the Facebook data breach, it is quite scandalous that we have placed our blind trust in giant social network platforms and email services Gmail etc. To Read more about Technological Updates Visit us atThinkwik
