Funding and Support • 1st year: Dane County, City of Madison, University of Wisconsin –Madison ($15,000) • Hired a part-time staff person • Support from UW Extension Dane County, Dane County Planning and Development Dept. • 12 volunteer Food Council members • Community volunteers and organizations • 2007: $5000 funding from Dane County

Consolidated Food Service • Coordinates food service for Dane County • Serves 4000 meals per day with 38 staff • In 2006: purchased $1.1 million of food • Sysco is prime vendor under a competitive bid process • Currently sources 7% from Wisconsin
CFS Food Distribution • County Jail, Badger Prairie Health Care Center, Juvenile Detention Center, Courthouse Café, and senior centers (Verona, Middleton, Mt. Horeb)
Resolution 257, 06-07 • Explore options for Dane County to purchase locally produced foods and use them in food service • Collaborate with Consolidated Food Service • Tiered definition of “local” • County Board adopted 3/18/07
Partnerships • Institutional Food Market Coalition • Exploring opportunities to increase the sourcing of WI grown products in institutional markets • Hosting a meeting of procurement directors and suppliers this week to increase collaboration and make connections • Coordinated by Olivia Parry, Dane County Planning and Development Department

Market Basket • Weekly food distribution program • no on-going commitment • Three options: Regular box ($14) --- $6-$10 savings Senior/Single box ($8) Organic X-box ($26) ---$10-$13 savings
Goals • Increase access for low-income families to fresh produce • Connect urban consumers to small-scale regionally produced fruits and vegetables • Simultaneously expand demand for local products and marketing opportunites for local producers
