  1. Welcome to Science

  2. What is FOSS? FOSS is a research-based science curriculum for grades K—8 developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California at Berkeley. FOSS is also an ongoing research project dedicated to improving the learning and teaching of science. The FOSS project began over 20 years ago during a time of growing concern that our nation was not providing young students with an adequate science education.

  3. Nonfiction Reading • FOSS is a science program that provides hands on experiments as well as nonfiction reading of each topic • The new common core requires that 50% of what our students read comes from nonfiction

  4. How do I help my child study • Each investigation (lab) has an objective that the students should learn from the hands on lab. • The students record the learned objective in their content/inquiry section in their science notebooks Content/Inquiry • Soap added to water reduces its surface tension.

  5. Assessments Quizzes • Their will be about 4 quizzes for each unit. The quiz will be a written response to a lab situation

  6. Assessments(Tests) Each unit has two parts for each test • Performance test • Written test
