Multiplying Fractions by Mixed Numerals • To multiply a fraction by a mixed numeral, you must first convert the mixed numeral to an improper fraction
Steps to converting a Mixed Numeral to an Improper Fraction • 5 ¾ • Multiply the whole number by the denominator • 5 x 4 • Next add the numerator to the product • 20 + 3 • Place this number over the numerator • 23/4
Once the mixed numeral has been converted to an improper fraction, multiply as usual ( numerator x numerator, and denominator x denominator) • Last step is to simplify • 5 ¾ x ½ • 5 x 4 + 3 = 23 • 23/4 x ½ = 23/8 • 23 ÷ 8 = 2 7/8
If both numbers are mixed numerals 3 ¾ x 2 1/8 • Convert both numerals to improper fractions 3 ¾ is 3 x 4 + 3 = 15/4 2 1/8 is 2 x 8 + 1 = 17/8 • Now multiply fraction by fraction • 15/4 x 17/8 = 255/32 • Simplify • 255/32 = 7 31/32
Try These: • 6 2/3 x 2/8 • 4/5 x 2 9/10 • 4 7/8 x 3 ¼ • 6 1/3 x 2 2/5
Multiplying a Whole Number by a Mixed Numeral 2 ¼ x 5 • Convert the mixed numeral to an improper fraction • 2 ¼ is 2 x 4 + 1 = 9/4 • 5 = 5/1 • Next multiply • 9/4 x 5/1 = 45/4 • Simplify • 11 ¼
Try These: • 2 x 3 2/3 • 7 1/3 x 21 • 8 x 7 1/6 • 2 ¾ x 6 • 7 x 2 4/5
