Colchester Vermont • DNA Pilot Study • Strategic Water Quality Plan • New EPA Wastewater/Stormwater Demonstration Project
Malibu California • Onsite Wastewater Risk Assessment/Risk Management Study • 20+ Groundwater monitoring wells • Lots of soil borings/permit data used • Hydrogeologic modeling using MODFLOW
Malibu CA – Risk Management • Utilize Groundwater Model as tool to evaluate TMDL objectives • Renewable Operating Permits for Commercial/ Multifamily Occupancies • Renewable Operating Permits for all Single family and Duplex Occupancies w/ Repair, Upgrade or New Construction
Nags Head North Carolina Decentralized Wastewater Management Plan • County/State regulates wastewater • Town-sponsored surface and groundwater monitoring since 2001 (paid by water department fees)
Nags Head NC – GIS Modeling • 49 systems with poor inspection results had repairs or were replaced • Over 1,750 systems are estimated to be performing properly • The performance of 1,800 systems is difficult to estimate
Groundwater Divide Groundwater Divide Nags Head Vulnerability Results
Nags Head NC – Data Used • Onsite System Inspection Database 2000-2004 • 1,151 Inspections on 1,009 properties • Dare County Health Department Permits 1998-2004 • 1,219 permits on 1,119 properties • Municipal Water Use 1999-2004 • 121,559 meter readings on 4,114 properties • Water Quality Database 2001-2004 • 46,069 measurements from 48 locations
Nags Head NC – Key Results • Older substandard systems (like sand bottom tanks) are impacting water quality • Systems at or in seasonal groundwater tables are impacting water quality • Systems close to surface waters have highest potential for impact • There are some clusters or neighborhoods which can be targeted for management efforts
Nags Head’s Management Plan • Voluntary Inspections • Substandard System Buyouts/Loan Program • Education & Outreach • Continued Water Quality Monitoring • Continued Permit Tracking
