Gorzycki MS Art Balance-principle of design A balanced composition or design is one where the visual weights of all the elements are equally distributed.
Symmetrical Balance • Symmetrical balance occurs when visual elements are mirrored from side to side or top to bottom. • When symmetry occurs with similar, but not identical, forms it is called approximate or formal symmetry.
Asymmetrical Balance • Asymmetrical balance occurs when the weight of a composition is not exactly mirrored, yet still achieves a sense of harmony in the design. • Often there is one dominant form that is offset by many smaller forms. • In general, asymmetrical compositions tend to have a greater sense of visual tension. • Asymmetrical balance is also known as informal balance.
Radial Balance • Elements of a design radiate from a central focal point in a balanced, almost circular scheme. • The central point does not have to be in the dead center of the design. • Radial balance is used infrequently.

( I used the Disney font) • Draw it to completely fill the triangle. (more on creating the triangles later) • Trace with ebony pencil and rub to transfer to create a design with radial balance using the “symbols” of american writing to create a mandala. • Outline with sharpie, erase smudges • Select a color scheme, use prisma colors to color each triangle identically.
