Types of Eruptions. Types of Volcanoes. Volcanoes and Plate Tectonics. Volcanic Eruptions (Volcanoes are Cool)
Quiet………or Violent! Eruptions are Classified as:
What is Silica • term given to rock material, added as magma melts up through rock layers. • It makes the magma thick and cooler.
What does water do • As rock heats it releases moisture, that allows magma to get hotter. • Water gets superheated and explodes when it reaches surface because of reduced pressure.
3 FACTORS THAT AFFECT LAVA FLOW RATE • Silica content, Water content, and Temperature of lava
What causes quiet or violent eruptions? • The amount of silica in the magma. • The amount of water in the magma. • Other gases in the magma.
Basaltic Magma • It is composed of basalt rock. • Contains little water and other gases. • Contains little silica. • Contain large quantities of iron. • Typically quiet eruptions.
Granitic Magma • It is composed of granite rock. • Contains large quantities of silica. • Contains water and other gases. • This magma is highly viscous. • Eruptions are typically violent.
A thick lava flow crosses the Provincial Road 92, menacing the Ristorante Corsaro on 18 July 2001. Photograph published in 19 July 2001 issue of the newspaper "La Sicilia"
The second lava flow to cover the Provincial Road 92 and threatened the tourist complex around the Ristorante Corsaro. It is still visible in the background. Photo taken on 26 July 2001 published in the newspaper "La Sicilia".
Spectacular night view of the erupting vents at 2700 m elevation, taken on 30 July 2001. Lights of towns between Acireale and Giarre in the background. Photo published in the 1 August 2001 issue of "La Sicilia"
Shield volcanoes relatively wide volcano can be tall thin, extremely hot basaltic lava Galapagos Island Types of Volcanoes:quiet eruptions…
Mona Loa, Hawaii Shield Volcanoes
Types of Volcanoes:moderate – violent eruptions… Cindercone volcano tall cone shaped volcano produces thick Granitic lava.
Types of Volcanoes:moderate – violent eruptions… Explosive blasts turn lava into minute particles called ash. Not as hot as shield. Cindercone volcano Mexico
Cindercone Volcanoes Not sure where Iceland
Usually the tallest of all volcano types. tall rounded cone shaped volcano Explosive- thick granitic lava Types of Volcanoes:mixed eruptions… Stratocone, composite cone Mount Shasta, USA
Quiet- thin basaltic lava Medium- mixture of lava produces Andesite rock. Types of Volcanoes:mixed eruptions… Stratocone, composite cone Mount Saint Helens
Stratocone/composite Volcanoes Tungurahua Volcano, Ecuador Mount St Helens
