  4. Collaboration is essential • Agencies must work together to create better outcomes for high-risk families • Strengthening Families puts the jigsaw together, and shows the big picture

  5. More evidence of success In recent evaluations: • agencies said they were providing better support • families and whanau said they felt listened to and understood

  6. Real families, real successes • Teenage boy re-enters mainstream education • Family finds housing, health, and learning solutions • Teenage mother gets support to parent with confidence

  7. The starting point • Strong, resilient, open relationships between the people and agencies involved

  8. Relationships are the bedrock • Local Management Groups have created invaluable networks • Government and community organisations have re-established local relationships

  9. Some of your achievements • Best practice case management model • Capacity building strategy for Pacific Island peoples • Implementing the strategy for children with High and Complex needs

  10. Since January 2000 … • Four thousand new cases, involving almost 9000 children and young people • Many more referrals from the community sector—increased confidence, important check

  11. Government support • An increase in funding every year • Ten government departments contribute to the budget • $200,000 discretionary fund • economic growth moderately positive • primary sector growth to continue • Service industries expanding

  12. Changes ahead • The Ministry of Social Development will provide leadership and co-ordination • National Family Services Unit, four regional offices, national advisory body

  13. A more preventative approach • Management Groups will continue to co-ordinate family support services • You will also provide an ideal platform for the strategy’s broader, more preventative approach

  14. Reaching more families • Some vulnerable families are missing out • Too many are not accessing services • Family Service work stream will address these issues

  15. How you can contribute • Local Management Groups have hands-on knowledge and experience • Your input is vital—policy makers need your ideas
